Domaine François Raveneau

Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 1990

Canary gold color, looks young. Memorable nose with notes of lemon, honeysuckle, white acacia blossoms, and white clay with that Kimmeridgian characteristic that says Chablis. With more air, you also get sea shells and ocean breeze, and the telltale Raveneau honey comes out. Coats the mouth... has a huge richness matched against robust structure. This becomes more sweet and exotic as the evening progresses. Of all the bottles tonight, this was gone first. As good as Chablis can get. (Bday 4 of 13) — 4 days ago

First Monty from Pierre Yves. A bit oaky and lacking in depth. 2004 vintage was hard. But still an excellent Montrachet. I don’t see it improving much with age. — 16 days ago

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1993

Reddish tawny, translucent. Youthful looking, especially when compared to its older brother the 1990 next to it. Tart Bing cherry nose. Also notes of rhubarb, earth, pepper and some spice. Young in the mouth. Still has some pucker and is very refined. Gave this 7 hours of air in the decanter and it needed every minute to open up and show its power and potential. Had wanted to check in on some big 93s and it's clear these bottles are built for the long haul. If you target the consumption of any similar 93s, be sure to give em lots of air. I was loth to open this so early, but so worth it. Candied ginger, vanilla, lemon oil, sweet tangerine, floral perfume, so aromatically complex. On the palate, fantastic acidity, more lemon oil, tangerine oil, pickled ginger, cardamom, off the charts density, and a fantastic finish, showing some white pepper and then building juiciness. — 10 days ago

Bienvenue Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 1990

The third in a string of white burgs all acquired from the Don Stott Sotheby auctions. This was notably darker than the previous two bottles. Some oxidation on the nose, with notes of candied lemon, brown sugar and some iodine. With air, there's some desirable citrus and leesy notes that come on. And while the oxidative note in the nose is noticeable, when you taste the wine you are hit with a ton of acidity that says this bottle is in no way over the hill. In fact as the wine took on more air, the nose took on typical old Ramonet notes including the mint and wet stones attributes. The acidity and power lasted for about an hour and then some decline happened. Pretty damn good juice and on other nights this probably would have been the favorite white. Domaine Rapet Père et Fils

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2015

Aromatics have a lot of lemon, some white fruit but also still a clear oaky feel to it. The wine is powerful, full bodied, good acidity, nice richness and the balance is good but there is a slight alcohol dominance on the finish. Nice bottle but not great. And not the most expensive Grand Cru but I will take many Premiers crus before that, shows there are no short cuts in Burgundy.

Nez assez aromatique de fruits blancs, du citron et encore pas mal boisé. C’est puissant en bouche, beaucoup de tout, fruit, acidité, richesse mais l’équilibre est précaire avec une finale un peu alcooleuse et chaude. Bien mais pas un niveau de GC.

Grand Cru Echezeaux Pinot Noir 2009

Good, but not the Romain-era wines I've fallen in love with, nor the recent vintages that have been very convincing. To be frank, this is the first wine I've tasted from the supposedly "troubled" years at Hubert Lignier. It kind of makes me think of KP sharing his thoughts about how you can always taste a winemaker's, or in this case family's psyche in a wine. Having said that, my issue with this wine's probably most attributed to the fact that it was made of purchased grapes from a relatively weaker Grand Cru, in a warmer vintage. Earthy and dark-fruited nose, which follows through into the densely-packed palate. It's not very giving at the moment, and never really developed with air. Finishes long, soft, and lush, with some spice and cocoa notes. I wouldn't call it flabby, but it's certainly lacking an expected elegance. — 24 days ago
