Cala Cala Vino Rosso Etna Nerello Mascalese Nerello Cappuccio Blend

Leathery and robust for an Etna Rosso. Earthy and yummy. Plum, blackberry, tobacco, some warm spice. Nice, volcanic minerals, ferrous. From Flatiron Wines. — 3 months ago

Etna Rosso Nerello Mascalese Nerello Cappuccio 2015

This is the higher end Calabretta, even though it’s very young compared to the house blend which is several years old. This has a bit of everything: gorgeous, deep black fruits, wild raspberry coulis, and it’s quite taut. Always the mineral driven frame. Could go years & years. Very good juice, truly. — 7 months ago

Sicilia Nerello Mascalese 2010

You have to understand that not many wines ( well, that’s a bit bombastic) give me more pleasure consistently than this, the most recent release-2010! From Calabretta . Kinda like Lopez de Heredia meets Vallana, ie Nebbiolo, though it is Nerollo Macalese. Smoked, tar, roses, fine & integrated tannins on the palate- strong mid palate which in my imagination has gotten stronger with age. Super lithe and really ethereal body- light, light to medium body but gorgeous acid spine, strong presence. Not a light wine. Bought a case or so a while ago-I fear the day I am down to one. Polaner importer. — a month ago

Love these wines. Haven’t tried any 2010s yet, still working on the ‘08s.

Even their NVs can be quite good @Josh Morgenthau. One of the great underdogs of Etna- viva el revolution!

Terre Siciliane Rosso Nerello Cappuccio 2015

Such a nice wine for the price...good grief. Have had a couple different nerello mascaleses from Calabretta but I think this is the first time trying Capuccio. Might have guessed an exuberantly fruity gamay from the nose. Medium body and tannins and a very nice long finish punctuated with good acid. Delicious. — 5 months ago

Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie 2007

2020/3/30-4/1. This starts off a bit rasiny on the nose - it’s labeled at 15% abv. The palate has some balancing acidity and is fairly dry, but I could do with less ripeness. I don’t remember this or Calabretta in general being so hefty, so maybe it’s the 2007 heat. The raisins also do calm down a bit on subsequent days, but I’d like to try the next vintage — 3 months ago
