Sicilia Nerello Mascalese 2005

Last of several bottles, 2005 vintage- still strong but perhaps some wear & tear. Still, an elegant (for Etna) wine, brick red in appearance, strong acidic backbone yet lithe in its medium body. Black fruits, no blueberries here, & the strong tannins are mostly integrated.I can imagine the Pinot comparisons, but feel this kind of Etna is even more unique. Has a slight petrol character, not unpleasant, reminds of a modern Alsatian Pinot noir. Nothing suave here either, but the in house aging & overall old school approach reminds too of old school Rioja like Lopez. Oh, & these sell for under 30$. Crazy. — 15 days ago

An absolutely unique and beguiling wine. A red with thick saline overtones almost dominating. Dark fruits, heavy savory herbal notes bordering on cannibus.m, wet soil and hints of leather. Fruits tune a little purple with air. Drying tannins, medium to medium plus acidity with drying tannins and only 12% abv. Just cool. — a year ago

Nerello Mascalese Vigne Vecchie 2007

Cala Cala Vino Rosso Etna Nerello Mascalese Nerello Cappuccio Blend

Probably my favorite “cheap” Italian red. Though tannic, well balanced w dark rich fruit, high acidity, and 14% al. Earthy in a great way. Great nose. Long finish. Nice alone. Or drink w meats and/or robust pasta. $18. (One weird item: there is no vintage year on the bottle). — 7 months ago

New Years part 2: prob should have decanted but still an amazingly alive, medium minus bodied volcanic -& smoothly edged- pinot noirish red. Methinks drink now — 2 years ago

Sicilia Pinot Nero 2016

A deep core of dark fruit takes center stage on this bottle - blueberry and blackberry and something like those but more wild and atypical, and fresh fruit but even some candies fruit notes. Herbaceous notes like bay leaf, oregano and tarragon and also exotic woods like sandalwood. Slight undercurrent of exotic spices m. Less Smokey and meaty notes than the last bottle I opened. This feels much more transparent, primary and...Burgundian?

Still with gray acidity and big drying tannins, but opening up. Excited to see it in a few years!

Warm vintage, elevated alcohol and concentration but much welcome for dinner on a cold January night. Scorched earth typicity prevails over barnyard aromas, slight va adding lift, but generally a sound bottle compared to past experience. The velvety/evolved tannins of this wine elevated its rusticity past other more predictably high toned and rigid Etna Rossos. — 6 months ago

Another great hold! The first vintage I tried and I’ve never liked another as much. Tons of acid still, no oxidation, in great shape. — 8 months ago
