Clos Troteligotte Cahors Malbec 2020

Still no notes, still celebrating our friend's 40th birthday. It's not my contribution but I'm super happy to see this wine here after I visited the winery last summer. — 12 days ago

Took some time to unwind & unfurl: showed copious aromas of black fruits, mocha, smoked meat notes, leading to generous mid-palate w/integrated tannins. There is clearly concentration here, great extraction without being overdone, ABV in check, pretty solid - not elegant or refined now, but has potential. A workingman’s wine. — 4 months ago

Château du Cèdre (Verhaeghe et Fils)

Cahors Malbec 2021

One of the bottles we brought back from our stay in the Lot region. Opened 1 hour and 30 minutes before serving. Served over a charcoal grilled super ribeye piece. Great pairing!
Very different take on cahors than the ones we tasted over there. Oak, chocolate, cassis, blackberry, cherry, a menthol thing too. Very inviting and complex. The palate shows a very long acid drive, some nice matter, a soft mouthfeel, some cherry, chocolatey and blackberry notes, some typical grainy, dusty tannins, and a long, everlasting finish with that dusty layer, some cherry, an oaky note reminiscent of the nose and a nice, delicate, savoury touch in the rear, with a very nice pinch of umami to make it great. Less extracted than expected (and than Le cèdre cuvée I had a few years ago), an elegant, modern Cahors. Great stuff!

Are they moving away from the need for wines to age, Daniel?

This one particular cuvée could probably benefit from aging a bit, but a decent amount of air made it very approachable. Of course we had it with charcoal-grilled beef which definitely helped taming down tannins.

Clos Siguier

Cahors Malbec 2019

Jalapeño/bell pepper, raspberry, chalk, underripe blood orange rind, medium tannins (leaning towards medium plus), dried herbs, slightly smoky, cherry on the finish and nice acid. Previous bottle could meld with chicken, not so much on this one. Will save to have with some meat tomorrow 😁 — 2 months ago

Château Eugenie

Cuvée Reservée De l'Aieul Cahors Malbec 2018

Deep ruby in color; graphite, black pepper, and cigar box on the nose; as it opens up, I'm getting a little black cherry on the nose; high acidity; medium plus tannins; tastes like crushed gravel, blackberries, and black olives with a long finish. Nellie says it's ok. Jason and I love it. — 4 months ago
