Tyrrells are better than ever Byron. Apart from these 2 excellent whites they have released some individual paddock Shiraz made from very old vines planted in the 1800’s - known as “Old Patch”. Difficult to source even in Australia as their online members snap them up. I did manage to get a couple of bottles through 5 Way Cellars in Sydney.

We lived in Wahroonga so Tyrell’s was a regular stop for us along with Tamburlaine, Lindeman’s, Brokenwood and Lake’s Folly.

Haven’t had Tamburlaine for some time , so not up to date. The others are all going strong, particularly Brokenwood, but Iain Riggs has jacked up his prices particularly for the Graveyard Shiraz.

Our final long lunch in Cairns at the Salt House on the waterfront. No formal notes but i have always loved this Shiraz from Waiheke Island in the middle of Auckland Harbour NZ. Plummy spicy and savoury with supple tannins. Overtones of Northern Rhone and easy to drink. — 5 years ago

Another wine brought to the Cairns BYO Indian Restaurant. Shadrach is Grant Burge’s best Cabernet expression whereas Meshach his best Shiraz. No formal notes but I do recall it still being full bodied and powerful at 16 years of age. — 5 years ago

Annual boys trip away. This time to Cairns. Brief notes. Possibly the WOTN. Just medium weight. With aromas of antique shop chest of drawers, old books. Wonderful persistence of flavour. Won’t get better but a very good showing from a lesser year. — 5 years ago

Pepik is the 2nd label of Josef Chromy from the East coast of Tasmania. Red fruits on nose and palate with a little white pepper. A good match with the superb seafood curry. — 5 years ago

Coriole’s Lloyd Shiraz has always been a rich wonderful full bodied expression of old vine McLaren Vale fruit. Red and black fruits with chocolate and supple fluid tannins. From an excellent vintage. Annual Boys Trip away - this time to Cairns. My contribution to the BYO Dinner at an Indian Restaurant. No formal notes but these are so long living even at 13 years, and first of 6, this is considered as young. Plums and herbs. One of my favourite Penfolds Cuvées because of its lack of new oak - 90% fruit driven. Excellent with a long future. — 5 years ago

Thanks Jamie. This was an Annual trip to watch the Bledisloe Cup Rugby between Australia and NZ in Sydney Melbourne or Auckland. Can’t go to any of these places currently so went to Cairns for the Cairns Cup horse racing, wining and dining and a cruise in a sloop on Sunday morning. Brilliant weather.
