Carnival of Love McLaren Vale Shiraz 2016

Powerful yet elegant Aussie Shiraz. Dark ruby color. Aromas of raspberry, eucalyptus and cocoa. Palate is rich with plum and raspberry fruit along with notes of root beer, baking spices, black licorice and Earl Grey tea. Hint of vanilla on the long and lingering finish. The tannins are concentrated but well integrated. Plush, rich and intense but beautifully balanced. Aging nicely. — 4 months ago

McLaren Vale Shiraz 2008

9.4

Seductive nose of blueberry, cassis, cedar, dark roasted coffee bean,, nutmeg, peppery spice, touch of barnyard, and hint of tobacco. Probably the most harmonious palate I’ve had in an Aussie Shiraz. The oak and alcohol are totally integrated, with ample acidity and soft elegant tannins. Powerful and graceful.
What a surprise!

Still pretty big and concentrated, but I think age did the magic in this bottle. Cheers @Jae Cho !

John Duval was the winemaker of Penfolds Grange for many years. One of a handful of winemakers in the history of Grange.

Keyneton Euphonium Barossa Shiraz Blend 2015

Classic Aussie Bordeaux blend. Unmistakably New World with the deep dark fruit on the nose and the full bodied round opulent style on the palate. Not enough tannin or acid to balance the super-ripe fruit. — a year ago

9.2

Classic Aussie Shiraz! 30+ minute decant. Hot nose. Peppery and spicy throughout. Big, powerful wine as expected. Nice depth with medium finish. Could use more fruit to balance out the chocolate and herb flavors. — 4 years ago

Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz 2020

Love these “Blue Boys.” Mollydooker (Aussie for left-hander) Wines was established in 2005 by Sarah and Sparky Marquis. Dark Ruby with dark berry fruit aromas adding sweet spice and cedar. On the palate this wine has complex flavors of blackberry and blueberry with licorice, cacao, oak and vanilla. Fine dusty tannins, peasant mouthfeel (16% Alcohol), full-bodied, long ending with a nice spicy finish. Aging well, good now, has room to run over short term. — 6 months ago

Romas Grenache 2010

Love me some Aussie single vin Grenache. Romas delivers. Nice jammy nose. Big rich black cherry on the palate with big doses of black pepper. Tannic structure still present and accounted for. 25 second finish with the pepper leading the way. — 4 years ago

This was my contribution. As I have really gotten in to Aussie wines the last year or two, I’ve always wanted to try this wine (of any vintage), and couldn’t believe my luck when a local acquaintance who is wanting to downsize his cellar offered me two bottles at an amazing price. Upon opening, I was hit with smoked brisket, touch of bacon fat, and ripe blackberries. Not quite gamey or funky, but definitely savory in style. As it opened, the meat/savory notes came and went ever so often, allowing purity of the blackberries, boysenberries, and black cherries to shine. Charcoal smoke with baked fig arrive at the finish. A complex, delicious wine, and right up my alley for the style of wine I enjoy. @David T , you were correct in thinking I’d love this! — 5 years ago

Always loved that ‘02 @Shay A, I think along with the inaugural ‘99 and the ‘12 it’s one of Dans finest!

@Bob McDonald : My thoughts exactly. Only the 4th vintage, as this began in ‘99. I’ll be holding my last bottle another year or two!

@Fraser McKinley : That means I need to get to finding some ‘12!
