Plexus Barossa Valley Shiraz Blend 2021

This Aussie GSM was much richer than most Rhône wines that I’ve enjoyed - more red fruit and compote. Enjoyable albeit not overly complex. — 8 months ago

Romas Grenache 2010

Love me some Aussie single vin Grenache. Romas delivers. Nice jammy nose. Big rich black cherry on the palate with big doses of black pepper. Tannic structure still present and accounted for. 25 second finish with the pepper leading the way. — 6 years ago

Prelude Vineyards Chardonnay 2017

Another aussie wine! Geez yup yup ripe fruit things going on but also yup yup there is a river bed flowing strong under it all...perhaps the...Margaret River? Lemon things. Stony things. Linen things it is fun and also not trying to not be new world if that makes sense. I can’t even this is goshdarntoheck good — 7 years ago

McLaren Vale Grenache 2012

Dark crimson - darker than you would expect from an Aussie Grenache. After the first glass straight out of the bottle I decided to decant which it needed. Dusty raspberry notes on nose and palate - very pure. A brilliant dense concentrated 100% Grenache from Australia’s master of alternative varieties - Steve Pannell. Although in Australia Grenache is not that “alternative “ as this wine comes from 70 year old bush vines in McLaren Vale. — 7 years ago

Got for a steal locally. 15ys on an Aussie Grenache had me curious how it was holding up…

Followed over a few hours from bottle. It could have maybe been double decanted to get some quick air to it as it is still rocking quite the tannin, but it smoothed out quickly. Ripe purple and black fruits (roasted plum, blackberries, black currant) aromatically mixed with sweet tobacco. No menthol/eucalyptus but a distinct sweet note on the mid-palate. Dark, juicy, ripe fruits with old fig jam. Age starting to show itself at the finish. Alcohol started to poke out as it warmed. Drink up.

Seductive nose of blueberry, cassis, cedar, dark roasted coffee bean,, nutmeg, peppery spice, touch of barnyard, and hint of tobacco. Probably the most harmonious palate I’ve had in an Aussie Shiraz. The oak and alcohol are totally integrated, with ample acidity and soft elegant tannins. Powerful and graceful.
What a surprise!

Still pretty big and concentrated, but I think age did the magic in this bottle. Cheers @Jae Cho !

Bass Phillip

Premium Gippsland Pinot Noir 2009

Gorgeous earthy perfume, Forest Floor - could be Burgundian. A Tawny edge to the colour. My 2nd favourite Aussie Pinot after the Bass Phillip Reserve. Savoury cherry nuances on the palate but overall more savoury than fruit driven. Light to medium bodied. Very fine Tannins with natural acid still present. I expected more mid palate fruit for what Phillip Jones described as “one of our best vintages” to that point. They have had better ones since IMO. I would not normally taste a BP Premium under 10 years (this being the first of 4) but having tasted this I wish I had had one say four years ago. In the category of wines I buy every vintage - like the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay. — 8 years ago

@Doug Powers If you get a chance try their top Cuvée - the Langi. One of our best Shiraz I think.

@Bob McDonald, when we visited there in November of 2023, I purchased a couple bottles of the Langhi, Mast and another Shiraz cuvée. Letting them rest a bit in the cellar.

Classic Aussie Shiraz! 30+ minute decant. Hot nose. Peppery and spicy throughout. Big, powerful wine as expected. Nice depth with medium finish. Could use more fruit to balance out the chocolate and herb flavors. — 6 years ago

This was my contribution. As I have really gotten in to Aussie wines the last year or two, I’ve always wanted to try this wine (of any vintage), and couldn’t believe my luck when a local acquaintance who is wanting to downsize his cellar offered me two bottles at an amazing price. Upon opening, I was hit with smoked brisket, touch of bacon fat, and ripe blackberries. Not quite gamey or funky, but definitely savory in style. As it opened, the meat/savory notes came and went ever so often, allowing purity of the blackberries, boysenberries, and black cherries to shine. Charcoal smoke with baked fig arrive at the finish. A complex, delicious wine, and right up my alley for the style of wine I enjoy. @David T , you were correct in thinking I’d love this! — 7 years ago

@Bob McDonald : My thoughts exactly. Only the 4th vintage, as this began in ‘99. I’ll be holding my last bottle another year or two!

@Fraser McKinley : That means I need to get to finding some ‘12!
