Richard Leroy

Les Noëls de Montbenault Anjou Chenin Blanc 2015

The unicorn Richard Leroy that just can’t seem to survive any length of time on American wine lists and to no surprise 86d on this occasion. It’s quite reductive begging for a long decant. It’s deep and precise and with zippy acidity showing fiji apple, lanolin and a touch of orange zest. Finishes with great length and tension. The fuss is justified. Great stuff.  — 10 days ago

Roche aux Moines Fournier Longchamps Family Chenin Blanc 2014

OK, this is WAY too young to be drinking now, but I have plenty more and it was time to finally taste it. Great cut, acidity, minerality, as good a dry Chenin as I’ve had since visiting Huet about 10 years ago. Needs significant cellaring, hope I live long enough!! Cheers!! — 5 days ago

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant Savennières Chenin Blanc 2009

Mid yellow in colour with greenish tinges. An oxidative Sherry like note. Mouldy ripe apple and apricot with a honeyed nuance. On the palate a full bodied white with a syrupy note. Ripe fruit developing a hefty 15.5% ABV. The delicious ripeness of the fruit hiding the high alcohol to an extent. This vineyard has a fascinating history. The Coulee de Serrant vineyard is a controlled appellation of only 7 hectares. The vineyard was planted in 1130 by Cistercian monks and today consists of vines aged from 35 to 80 years old. This Serrant wine was celebrated by Louis XI and Louis XIV as one of the best French white wines. — 10 days ago

Anjou Rouge Cabernet Franc 2018

The nose makes you think this will be on the rustic side. The palate is quite approachable and easy right away. More structure (tannin) than expected at the entry level, but this definitely has the texture to balance the generous fruit. Very good. — 14 days ago

Saumur Chenin Blanc 2016

Damp earth, chesnut, witch hazel, spring flowers, spring greens, crisp pear, lemon peel, quinche, salted ham, flint, green tea. A riot of acid and waxy chenin richness, impeccable balance. First time getting this wine in the glass with some bottle age 😍 — 18 days ago

Saumur Brut Cabernet Franc Rosé

Delicate deep rose color and lots of tiny bubbles. Cab Franc grapes. Soft berry and plum on the nose. Crisp and really flavorful, with a finish that reminds me of Languedoc. Made myself a board of blackberries, fontina, and prosciutto to go with this. Divine. — 12 days ago
