Monthly WTF wine group. Special event this month as Ben provided all ‘80s Napa cabs. A few of us chipped in and provided some whites/bubbly.
Probably the surprise of the night. Not only was this the winner of the flight (against the Freemark Abbey) it almost took over the RM Reserve and the JPhelps for best wine on the table. The fact that this was 32yrs young is just nuts. Fruit had turned more ripe, with a more molasses note with nutmeg. — 4 days ago
What a delicious blend. Dark fruit, chocolate, along with some minerality A real treat! — 2 days ago
October birthday celebrations for my father-in-law, sister-in-law and my wife this past weekend!
My father-in-law has a nice collection of older Napa cabs and he wanted to check in on this. I found it to actually taste fairly young. There wasn’t as much punch in regards to the flavor of the fruit (lots of blackberry, currant) but the tannins were very much in play. Reminded me of a right bank Bordeaux, actually. Dusty graham cracker, blackberry, potpourri. Secondary notes of leather and herbs are starting to come through on the finish. — 13 days ago
Bowman Cellars. Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander valley. Nose is a little sweet, but very nice. Palate is not as sweet, cocoa, tannins, cherries, dried fruit, also alcohol. — a day ago
Perfect pairing with a lamb tagine. Big but not overwhelming. Nice balance. Some cherries and a hint of leather. Well done. — 7 days ago
Last night I had the pleasure of being with close friends for an evening of reminiscing and life long friendship. We got to open the 2010 Goldschmidt Vineyards Single Vineyard Yoeman Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.
On the nose was black cherry, blackberry, plum, lack currant, cassis, nutmeg, violets, dark chocolate, vanilla, smokey oak and a good dose of rich earth.
On the palate was rich black cherry, sumptuous blackberry, black plum, tobacco, cassis, chocolate, spice, smokey oak and rich dusty soil.
The wine is full bodied with a silky smooth mouth feel with medium acidity and medium to plus smooth fine tannins that lead right to a long enjoyable finish. This wine made the evening even that more enjoyable and just goes to show that wine can accentuate what was already a beautiful evening of friendship. Have a great week and please be safe. I was surprised to find this 2012 on a menu by the glass for $13. It’s earthy, with just enough tannins. Big berries on the front, with currants and cassis. — 3 days ago
75 Merlot, balance Cab Franc. Wildflowers and fig newton in the nose. Enters with nice ample fruit. Cigar box and leather. Touch of Brett. Middle that carries a touch more acidity and grip, but black fruit dominated. Finished with a hint of tobacco and almond. Still even a bit tannic. Really think this is a great time for this wine. Thoroughly impressed by this offering from Claude. I think it could probably go another 5 to 10 years easy. — 18 days ago
