Devil Proof

Farrow Ranch Malbec 2015

Greg Ballington
9.3

First time trying these Malbecs from Jesse Katz and Devil Proof. Thanks Lauren for cracking these for us! Dark purplish red with some garnet too. Loads of spices on the nose intermixed with red berries and some blue fruit. Medium plus tannins (7.5/10) and full body. Rich and a touch dry on the palate with layers of black currants, dirt, herbs, black dried fruits, bark and almost a touch of cola. A bit spicy too leading into the long finish. Drink till 2036. Wow. This is the second best Malbec, just bet out by its new younger sibling - the Rockpile Ridge. This is made up of 100% Malbec from a single block (Block #17) on the Farrow Ranch vineyard which was planted back in 2002 with Clone 4 and Clone 595 Malbec. It is aged in 100% new French oak barrels similar to the Rockpile Ridge.

First stop (Aperture Cellars and Devil Proof Vineyards) on our very first trip to Sonoma, and we were not dissappointed. The wines made by Jesse Katz have a ton of finesse, power and character, but the wines under his Devil Proof Label are at another level. Definitely a Malbec that needs to be on any wine collector's radar. The photo for the label was taken by Andy Katz, Jesse's father, back when he was commissed by the Cuban Government to take photos of their way of life. We love the saying for the label "Live well, drink well, and the devil can't get you". We do not know about you but we will follow her lead and hopefully become a little bit Devil Proof.

Stonestreet Winery

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1996

Pulled this after visiting Alexander Valley today and tasting at Skipstone (Highly recommended!) Stonestreet’s 1996 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon shows damp earth, tomato leaf, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and charcoal, with a faded edge of black cherry and dried currant. While it’s certainly on its last leg, it’s a sturdy leg that’s not giving in anytime soon. — 5 days ago

Love the Skipstone Oliver's blend... it's like cerebral comfort food.

Aperture

Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

9.0

First stop on our MD trip this year was to Aperture Cellars in downtown Healdsburg.

First red wine at Aperture Cellars with Lauren. Deep ruby red in appearance. Layered nose with baking spices, little bit of purple flowers and some dusty dark cherries. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus body. Seems to have gone into a silent phase but excited to see where it will be in a couple years. Long finish. Drink till 2026.

Aperture

Oliver's Vineyrard Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Greg Ballington
9.2

Last of the single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings we tasted at Aperture Cellars with Lauren. Dark purplish ruby red. Ripe red berries on the nose with some spices, perfume and a touch earthy. Medium tannins (7/10) and full bodied. A bit of heat on the palate with some cassis, black cherries and spices. Not as vast as the Del Rio with a touch of dark cocoa. Needs some time to pull itself together. Dry and gravelly long finish. Drink from 2019 till 2030. (92+)

This is made up of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc from the Oliver Ranch Vineyard and cultivated by Phil Freese. Who actually does another one of our favorites - Vilafonté in South Africa.

First stop on our very first trip to Sonoma, and we were not dissappointed. The wines made by Jesse Katz have a ton of finesse, power and character. Definitely a winery for any wine lover or collector to have on their radar. Stay tuned for some exciting new wines coming out in the 2017 vintage, possibly an old vine Zinfandel. Also a must visit for art and photography lovers.

First stop on our MD trip this year was to Aperture Cellars in downtown Healdsburg.

Second wine tasted at Aperture Cellars with Lauren. Pale lemon lime yellow. A bit of hay on the nose to start followed up by some lemon zest. Nice sharpness on the palate with medium plus acidity (7.5/10) and medium to medium plus body. Refreshing palate with a touch of white flowers, sandy crushed rocks and some green tree fruits. Long finish that needs a little bit of air to open up. Drink till 2024.

Robert Young Estate Winery

Alexander Valley Malbec 2014

Very youthful Malbec. Poured a very deep violet into the glass. This wine had a nose of purple fruit and cinnamon out of the glass right from the very start. However, the palate was quite restrained initially, showing a lot of oak and some sweeter purple fruits and maybe a hint of bitter chocolate. As the wine sat, it opened up very nicely. The aforementioned notes became much more verbose, and also gathered a cinnamon and spice cake kind of note in the middle. This is not a full bodied wine, and it never developed to being so. However, I was definitely feeling every bit of the 14.8% ABV. The finish is still a bit stiff, and I believe that a few more years in the bottle will help this part of the wine out the most. This one fell victim to experiment, but a nice experiment nevertheless. — 12 days ago

Alexander Valley Vineyards

Wetzel Family Estate Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Time for my Friday's Cabernet fix. This week it's a great one from Alexander Valley.

Dark ruby in color with a purplish rim.

Great fruity nose with blackberries, sweet cherries, figs, raisins, vanilla, smoke, cedar, licorice, cola, chocolates, mocha and black pepper.

Full bodied and bold with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry and very fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked strawberries, oak, vanilla, licorice, cloves, herbs, spices, dark chocolates, coffee, tobacco and peppercorn.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a wonderful cabernet from Sonoma County. Well-balanced with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel. Still young, but already enjoyable even by itself.

Good right out of the bottle and needs an hour to open up properly and show some tannins.

A good wine to pair with BBQ steak. I really liked the nose here. Will be better in a year or two.

To the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were also added small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Aged for 14 months in oak barrels.

14.2% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$20.

Rodney Strong

Single Vineyard Alexander's Crown Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Rodney Strong might be on the way back up. This is their Alexander’s Crown 2013, cabernet sauvignon . I picked it up for 60 bucks. Retail is usually 80. I would not pay that for it, but for 60 its not bad. Honig for 40 is better. Thwre is oak and spice and everything nice. It is dry and mouth watering for more!!! — 4 days ago

Chateau St. Jean

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Color of dark yet saturated ruby, quite bloody. Nose of chocolate, ripe cherry, sweet sugarplum, ripe fresh grape, a bit mineral, strength of alcohol, and a bit sweet oak. Taste of mineral, sweet raisins and sugarplum, oak, more oak, a bit dill, soft tannins, mouthful, and alcohol content is high yet hidden below the sweetness. Aftertaste follows similar note, with tannins, dill clove notes, and mineral note stand out more. Medium long. Enjoy her now. — 15 days ago
