When in the Great White North, one eats poutine and Alberta beef and drinks bold reds from the Okanagan Valley recommended by the friendly cashier. Brings to mind Columbia Valley Merlot, but on steroids in terms of the concentration of the color and intensity of the tannins (rustic, dusty), flavors and aromas reflecting the high, dry dessert UV intensity and long growing season sunlight hours (still light here in Canmore after 10pm). More dark fruit (blackberry, black currant, black plum—some raisened/craisen notes, but mostly ripe and fresh) and herbal character (menthol, thyme, resin) than I normally find in Merlot that makes this wine really intriguing and distinctive. First impression: smells like regular cheap whiskey. Taste, ditto, except stronger (65.1% after all). Great rye flavour though. Suspect that the other ingredients in most Canadian whiskey blends (eg corn) missing from this limited edition ‘best whiskey in the world 2020’ are part of the allure. Mine also had bits from the cask floating in the bottle (yay for authenticity?).

After allowing it to open up with a large ice cube: smells a lot more pleasant and almost like a 15 or 18 year aged whiskey. Taste is still the same initially but sipping obviously gives you a better full spectrum. Alcohol is numbing. Lots of complex flavours from the cask (toasted oak, dark sugar, rye bread) but they don’t linger as compared with 15 or 18 year blends. Would make a damn good strong old fashioned.

From my gal (whose palate is much better than mine but thinks tracking wine is too much work): Chilled and perfect. Dusky, ruby plum colour. Smells like sweet Alberta wild rose, cranberries, sour cherry, pie spice and a damp evening. Tastes like tart cherry, bell peppers and cola bottle candies. The chilledness walks a fine line between bright acidity and subtle tannins at the end. — 2 years ago
