Williams Selyem

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2002

David T
9.3

Not exactly pizza wine but, I bought six bottles of this 02 Williams Selyem for $35-$36 w/ tax & fees recently on the secondary market. I have enjoyed a number of their 02’s for many years…such a great Pinot Noir Sonoma vintage. Especially, for WS. I feel for the seller who actually barely might have broke even or even lost a couple of bucks on this sale after fees.

Still spectacular after 18 plus years in bottle. She is still strutting her stuff.

Visually you look at the color in the glass, it’s silty & cloudy.

The body is ripe, rich, smooth & shining integration. The fruits bright, somewhat candied, floral & showing shades of stewed. Blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, cherries, poached strawberries, pomegranate juice, slightly dry cranberries, raspberries with singing purple & blue fruits as it sets. Some dark, rich, dark forest floor with dry leaves & twigs w/ tree sap, vanillin, nutmeg, cinnamon, dark spices, notes of dry herbaceousness - bay leaf, sage & marjoram, black licorice, mixed berry cola, powdery limestone & dry rocks, just a hint of pepper, grilled, savory meats, fresh tobacco leaves, red, blue, dark flowers laid in a field of violets. The acidity is like a spring shower. The finish is rich, ruby, well knitted & balanced with length & polish for days.

Its subtle knock, a touch hot at the beginning with it fading in the second glass.

The 02 is singing with another 3-5 years of good drinking ahead. It’s new world with Burgundy threads.

For me, this WS Pinot Noir is seriously peaking. Best bottle of the 02 WS Sonoma Coast I have enjoyed over the 12-15 bottles I’ve had.

Definitely pushing 94. I stole these amazing bottles. Thank you universe.

Premiere Cuvee Menetou-Salon Pinot Noir

Concentrated and mineral expression of Pinot Noir in the Loire. Beautiful melted acidity with primary notes of raspberries/cerises. Body and finish on floral, herbaceous and earthy notes. Persistent tanins in finesse. Beautiful musk and spicy notes. Superb in this price range.

Carter Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

Color of different shades of purple with mix of ruby tone. Nose is nice with elegant aldehyde, plum, a bit chocolate, sweet dried strawberry, oily paint, and the nose keeps coming. Nose is far different from conventional Pinot Noir, but more like high end Barolo. Taste follows the nose with addition of coke cola flavors, a bit minty and zesty, a bit vanilla sweetness, low tannins and hint of ripe berries. Silky and flavorful. Aftertaste is long and shows some more ripe grapes. A gem. — a day ago

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2019

Reddish in color with medium intensity.

Fruity nose with cherries, ripe strawberries, raspberries, light oak, vegetables, earth and spices.

Medium-bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with raspberries, strawberries, bing cherries, oak, wild flowers, light vanilla, spices, dark chocolates, herbs and peppercorn.

Medium finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This young Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast is drinking nicely already. Fruit forward and easy drinking. Light and approachable.

This Single Vineyard is showing mild complexity with a nice mouthfeel.

After after an hour of airtime, it gets earthier, with some bitter herb notes. Would be nice to revisit it in 2 years.

Good right out of the bottle and good with food. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

A very small production of only 5 barrels.

14.2% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$42.

Côte de Beaune Villages Pinot Noir 2018

On this Thursday evening I have decided to open the 2018 Louis Jadot Cóte de Beaune-Villages.

On the nose there is strawberry, cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, baking spice, mushroom and earth.

On the palate there is cherry, raspberry, hibiscus, clove, mushrooms, minerality, a touch of oak and earth.

This wine is medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel with medium + acidity with fine tannins and a long red fruit earthy finish. We are on the precipice of another weekend and enjoying our time off with family and friends. Please enjoy your time of and please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

D122 Pinot Noir 2013

Wow, the six years since my last btl have really been generous to this wine. Absolutely lovely light-styled PN now. On the nose: perfumed red fruit, loads of stony minerality, soft rose hips, a hint of blood orange..fantastic aromatic complexity and still rather primary. On the palate: excellent density, very nice acidity and weight, with more spicy red fruit and lots of stony notes. Lovely soft spice and very soft tannin on the elegant finish. This is fantastic now, and seems like it will age very gracefully, if this btl is representative. Yum! — a day ago

Domaine Bizot

Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir 2017

A very rare bird almost impossible to find where the production on their 9 plots only amounts to a total of 9000 btls. I discovered their wines when I attended a Bizot tasting & lunch at Marea in Feb 2020 where I found their whole cluster wines had this beautiful purity of fruit & transparency. This btl was no different offering up an amazing nose of red cherry & berry fruits, lush & pure on the palate with baking spices, floral & mineral notes. A wine that is so good now you can drink young but will reward time in the cellar. — 6 days ago

Hi James, a good friend and an avid collector flew in last week to have dinner with me & brought me this btl as a gift as he knew I was a big fan of Bizot. He gets a small allocation every year but was offered no 2017’s so he sourced it from Europe. Cheers!

Always a value and in 19 a superstar value. Deep, penetrating nose. Huge black cherry, dark red cherry, cherry skin, backed up by unreal minerality. So clear and deep. Much more serious than the Cabottes. Spice and earth. The full Burgundian symphony. Such a sappy nose. 9.4 nose. Just brilliant! Wow, what concentration and purity. Unreal. So sappy and pure but so fresh. Insane tiny berry fruit intensity. So so good. Structured as well and seems slightly clipped on the back end for now. But air will surely cure that. As I just took a sip the finish is extending and expanding as is the back palate and that gamey note comes through. Best version of this ever. A benchmark. — a day ago

Have not had since November 2018. This is in a great place now. Unreal forest floor, dead leaves and mega sous bois. Just gorgeous and showing signs of age. Mint. Super complex and so old school. Wonderful. Incredible minerality. Palate is still much more youthful than the nose suggests. Sappy, sweet, structured and deep. Unreal finesse, breadth and concentration. Tiny berry fruit intensity. Sweet tannins and awesome length. Really really long. Im sure air will really make this elite. Easy 9.5 right now — a day ago

I was just looking at my bottles of this wine/vintage last week and wondered if it was in the drinking window yet. Looks like the answer is yes! Will have to give one a try soon!
