Good red but didn't sing and lost its best notes over 2-3 days it was open — 14 days ago
My first time trying one of the hotly anticipated 2019s from J. J. Prüm, this being the Kabinett from the Himmelreich vineyard in Graach. 2019 was a hot vintage which benefited from cooler temperatures and rain towards harvest in September, tempering already high sugars in many of the grapes. A degree of the crop had been lost both through hail in Spring and sunburn in August. Nevertheless, 2019 has been lauded as the vintage of the century, drawing comparisons to 2016 Bordeaux, among others - and is especially successful at the drier end of the classification. So, how does this wine from the Kabinett Prädikat fare?
It’s a featherlight Riesling, often the mark of this estate in any given vintage, but while airy and graceful, there’s tremendous intensity to the palate, great persistence and a very long finish. A touch reticent at this stage, but that doesn’t fully hinder the aromas of orange marmalade, white peach, blueberry, juniper and tomato vine,
Aaand my notes ended there - perhaps I was enjoying it too much 🫠😅 either way, this was a knockout Kabi! — 24 days ago
Had with spicy clam pasta. Wow. Incredible. Robust. Floral. 10 — 17 days ago
Peach, apple, touch of reduction. Shows warmth of vintage but still transparently Roulot. Decently priced on the lost at Nomad in London — 18 days ago
Deep and dark blackberries, blueberries, currants followed by fig, leather, smoke, licorice and long steady earthy finish — 2 months ago
Hasn't been so long since I opened this, but I'm trying to keep my hands off the Clos Electrique and Abbey Ridge. Wanted to wait until day 2, but failed. Pop, pour, showed a little funk, so I splash decanted this and let it sit. Notes from 2 hrs open. With some air, the funk becomes a lovely earthy mushroom savory note, with loads of sweet strawberry and cranberry carrying it. Fantastic acidity and spice on the palate, with a touch of black tea and very soft tannin. Another special bottle. — 3 days ago
Hasn’t lost a beat. Everything you expect including citrus, honey and French toast. — 9 days ago
Cork was soft and crumbly - lost into the bottle so out comes the strainer. First uncork and pour impressions concerned me that this wine was tired with disappointing oxidation. Fortunately, fortitude is rewarded so after a half hour, charming caramel, marzipan and amaretto tertiary notes waft up from the glass, followed by secluded dark fruit and some latent spicy notes. Palate is the same, tannins are still hearty though muted from their likely initial gnarly state. Acidity remains current though the relatively rapid evaluation after 14 years suggest a #napa #cabernetsauvignon gently coasting down past peak. The wine paired quite nicely with spinach & parsley pesto rigatoni finished with breadcrumb and pistachio crumble - especially considering the nutty notes in the wine and muted fruit. — 4 days ago
