l'Étonnat Monsieur Victor Edition MK.09 Champagne Blend

MK09, the first release of this fabulous Cuvée, aged 6 years on natural cork and disgorged in 2015, is totally in the zone right now. So great to have snagged off the Cut DC wine list to start the night. Ripeness, freshness, oxidative complexity, a complete Champagne. It flaunts intense aromas of toasted hazelnut, apple pie and baking spice with a creamy and rounded palate that is both pure and chiseled and layered with minerality. A fantastic Champagne. — 4 days ago

Cuvée L'Artiste Blanc de Blancs Extra-Brut Champagne 1er Cru Chardonnay

LV10. Pop and pour. Stunner, but better on day 1 than on day 2. On the nose: soft florals, vanilla, lemon, lime. On the palate: soft mousse, lovely acidity, grapefruit pith, wet stone and a solid finish. Clashed a bit with some of the heat in some plates last night, but fantastic on its own. Seems to be peaking. — 6 days ago

Brut Champagne Blend 2010

Truly excellent and perhaps accessible like the 2009. Great with food and always impresses us as we have an idea of the number of bottles they produce. Its very impressive quality. No rush but can provide lots of pleasure right now. — a month ago

Jérome Coessens

Largillier Blanc de Noirs Brut Champagne Pinot Noir 2015

Talk about a singular expression of Pinot Noir. A pale gold coloring with effusive creaminess and a nice stream of very small bubbles. The aromas are a bit muted upon opening with just a bit of apple goodness to start the show. But let it sit for a while in a larger bowl and you’ll be rewarded. Warm cinnamon and crusty bread. Roasted nuts and blackberries all day long. There’s some fresh cherry and plenty salinity to boot.

Single vintage, single varietal, single vineyard. The hallmark of Jerome Coessens. 100% Pinot Noir from the lieu-dit of Largillier. The fruit hails from the plots that he has dubbed Fruit and Flower and that’s amazingly accurate. The amount of yellow fruit and floral notes are just ethereal in nature. The acidity borders on “racy” but instead settles on “zippy” which is just fine.

The attack is one that is quite pointed and full of finesse. It’s a very generous champagne that grows by leaps and bounds over time in the glass. An abundance of red and yellow fruits along with black pepper and dried herbs. Very fruity on the long finish with an added kick of spice. Singular and gorgeous.

Les Pierrières Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 2014

The coveted 2018 disgorgement! 48 month sur lattes Les Pierrieres is a total stunner. Raring to go right out of the bottle, it’s simply just a complete Champagne. It displays a stunning crystalline purity and a seamless combination of richness and elegance. It’s layered with white flowers, fresh brioche, lemon candy and signature chalky minerals with fantastic persistence, cut and texture. A little age goes such a long way with these wines. Terrific. — 9 days ago

Extra Brut Champagne Pinot Meunier

Alder Yarrow
9.0

Been writing about Champagne this weekend and it just made me thirsty, so broke out a little esoterica for sun dinner. Made 100% from Pinot Meunier, this wine offered sappy, berry and crabapple flavors with a nice chalky underbelly. Delicious. — 2 days ago

Dom Ruinart Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 2007

Belatedly celebrating @Deked1’s special day with his favorite bottle of bubbles! 🥂🥂

This wine was disgorged in 2017 after aging on the lees in Ruinart’s chalk cellars for a decade. It’s spent the last 5 years in the bottle.

With a pale gold hue, this wine is showing some delicious signs of age, but also remains incredibly vibrant.

It offers a fine mousse with rich notes of lemon curd, flint, hazelnut, marzipan, toast, and brioche. Yas!! 👏🏻 It’s so darn good. We don’t want this bottle to end.

I’m English by birth, so July 4th is not a good look for us. I’ll be keeping a very low profile on that day 🥲

Pommery

Brut Royal Champagne Blend

Equal blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunière. Bright yellow color with hints of green. Bright aromas of lemon, white flowers, freshly baked white bread and red berries. Elegant pallet is full of lemon and red berry flavors. Hint of minerality on the finish. Not overly “bready,” so it is quite refreshing and a good stand alone bubbly. Fresh and clean with great balance. I drank this one from a Pouron. Thank you Kasey and Petey! — 10 days ago

Brut Millesime Champagne Blend 2015

You can smell the yeast/baking bread from the moment you pop the cork. Not a producer I’m at all familiar with. A strong but pleasant vanilla/marzipan/nutty finish. Perfect for early evening al fresco meal of grilled gingery shrimp & shishitos. — 6 days ago
