Startlingly saturated color. Nose jumps out of the glass with crushed boysenberry juice, cassis, turned forest soil, toasty vanilla barrel scents. Bone dry, flavorful, with lip-smacking acids, flavors are just-ripe tangy berries with a hint of an almost Loire Cab Franc-like machine oil note. Tannins, while not prominent, are super-soft. Valmur Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2001

Replaced a badly corked 02 Dauvissat Clos with this. Medium gold color, heavy like oil in the glass. Immediately it shows off its Raveneau nose with notes of apricot, white clay, sea breeze, tan spice and river stone. Enjoyed over 5 hours after a 2 hour decant. Great juice! — a month ago

Carneros Chardonnay 2021

On the nose I was worried about the oak. But honestly? This s*#t’s delicious. I don’t have much Rombauer experience aside from hearing wine hipsters disparage it. Maybe it’s changing stylistically because this had a really cool mellow feel to it. Very silky, very stone fruit, and a graceful Werther’s without the sweetness finish. Honestly I think I just drank it too young. Like in a few years the oak is gonna meld in nicely. I recommend this with anything involving cheese. Any cheese. Cheap cheese, fancy cheese. Any cheese. I can’t stop saying cheese. Cheese. And wine. Happy Friday everyone. — 21 days ago

Domaine de Chantemerle

Fourchaume Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2019

With flecks of green shining through its yellow robe, the 2019 Domaine Chantemerle Fourchaume is a brilliant young Chablis, a touch reticent in youth as you might expect but a very enjoyable wine nonetheless. The nose is a little muted for now, with glimpses of peach, chamomile and wet stone, while the palate is taut but generous, spilling out over the tongue with juicy lime, Granny Smith apple and terrific chalkiness. If it were a case, I’d look forward to trying this in a year or two’s time; alas, this was a lone half bottle but a great accompaniment to prawn orzo pasta.
