Rex Hill Vineyards

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2018

Earthy, dark and serious nose, followed by a smooth balance of fruit, acid and tannin, red berries and earth, not as bright and acidic as other Willamette Valley Pinots and I actually prefer this style. Not too heavy and fruity like some California Pinots can be, not too thin and acidic like some Oregon Pinots, and more approachable than that snooty French stuff. Pleased with this bottle. — 4 hours ago

Stony Hill

SHV Napa Valley Chardonnay

This is a note for Stony Hill Chardonnay, Spring Mountain District, vintage 2019. The last vintage without malo. Yellow apple, creamy yogurt, smoke and vanilla pods. Slightly brioche. Med-/med acidity. Creamy texture and mouthfeel. Aged 80 years' old foudres. The new winemaker started experimenting with malo, we'll see how it will turn out. We had a long walk around the vineyards looking at all the Chardonnay vines up on the hill together with the Malbec vines up there. Closer to the estate level are singled staked Riesling vines due to vine age - these are the oldest Riesling vines in the valley. Cab Franc are planted in the center area and at the front are some Gamay. Mostly on VSP some on Lyre because of western exposure. Cab Sauv were first planted in 2005. 2010 was the first Cab vintage. They had let quite a large area fallow for ~15 years, and just recently started some new plantings. Exciting stuff. — a day ago

Willamette Valley Chardonnay 2019

Juicy, mouth filling Chardonnay; great food wine. Green apples and green grapes on the nose; followed by citrus, nutmeg and slightly oaky notes. Not too thin and acidic, not too buttery and flabby, just right. 2019 vintage. — 4 hours ago

Colgin

Tychson Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

It’s been a long day…couple of days actually. I’ve been lucky to get some buffalo loin and this beautiful wine from Colgin to pair. Deep dark fruits, dark chocolate and espresso. The winemaker describes the 2017 vintage as having a sense of clarity and purity, something we could all use a little more of these days. — 12 days ago

Kelly's Reserve Tasmania Pinot Noir 2014

Aromatic notes of rose and violet. Great depth of delicious flavour on the medium bodied palate. Red fruits - savoury and rich. See previous note for the 2014 - always excellent but 8 years of cellaring has enhanced this wine. To have won the Jimmy Watson Trophy for the Best One Year Old Dry Red at Royal Melbourne and still starring now at 8 years of age shows this is a wine for all seasons and all years. Should be a regular purchase. A Winner. — an hour ago

Diamond Creek Vineyards

Volcanic Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

Dark brooding color, opaque with lighter rims. Tight nose, hard to get a read. Notes of red fruit and raspberries, kirsch, cola and some ash comes on later. Nicely made juice, it’s well balanced. While it opened up some over the night, it was tough to get a read on this. I could only come up with mid 90s Napa Cab. Still, this is a wine lover’s wine and our ribeyes went well with this and the other bottles tonight. — 23 days ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

9.1

Showed much better than previous note: inky, generous blackberry, mocha, tobacco leaf, black cherry, cassis on nose, with herbs & pepper accents - impressive complexity on the aromatics for sure… big fat mid-palate in need of sturdier tannins. Kinda fell over all the place, but in a delicious decadent way. — 4 days ago

The Barrel Blend Napa Valley Merlot Blend 2017

Last bottle of this, and it’s always a great value. Even though it’s a Merlot-heavy blend, a bit of what seems like nice Cabernet character, with dark berries and cassis, cedar comes through. Great balance. Tannins very soft. I always buy too little of this. — 4 days ago
