Penfolds Grange Bin 95

Penfolds

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 2019

Referred to as the “Baby Grange,” blend of 53/47 Cab Sauv & Shiraz, aged for 12 months in American oak, partly in previous-vintage Grange casks. Dark Ruby with aromas of fresh black fruits, complex with sweet spice. On the palate flavors of juicy black cherry and blackberry flavors with notes of cacao, oak and toasty spices, from cooler vintage. Well balanced with acidity, full ripe tannins, long ending with smoky spice, fruit well integrated with oak, drink over next 10 years+, will only get better. Nice! — 4 months ago

Incredible wine! Deep purple color- almost inky. Aroma of blackberries, cassis, vanilla and violets. Black fruit on the palate, plum, baking spices with a lovely finish.

Bin 600 California Cabernet Shiraz 2018

Rich crimson with purple tinges. It certainly has the Penfolds winemaking thumbprint of ripe fruit and toasty oak. As HH said it tastes more Australian than Californian even though all the fruit is Californian and it was vinified there. These are the details (78% Cabernet 22% Shiraz. Napa 45%, Sonoma 35%, Paso Robles 20%). In hindsight it probably tastes Australian because of the Cabernet Shiraz blend which is common in Australia and rare (or nonexistent in California?). This venture for Penfolds has been 30 years in the making with Shiraz cuttings being brought from South Australia to Geyser Peak in Sonoma back then as our host for the dinner explained on the night. 4 Cuvées, all Red have been made ranging in price of $95 for this wine to $950 for Quantum. 70% of the production has been allocated to the North American market so dinners such as the one we had are quite rare in Australia because of lack of stock. This Bin 600 even though the least expensive of the 4 Cuvées will live well into the late 2030s even though it is so well balanced you could happily drink it now. — 5 years ago

Surprising amount of tannins left in this 95. Best Shiraz I've had hands down. — 9 years ago

Grange Hermitage Bin 95 Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 1990

Another bottle off my bucket list.
First time tasting a Grange so nothing to compare it to, no idea how it compares to another vintage but it was definitely unique. I can’t think of anything I could compare it to. I didn’t want to lose the flavors by having food with it, just enjoyed through out the day and seeing how it developed. My rating might be high since I’m a rookie Granger. Mint, cream and distant woodsmoke on a cold day combine on this supremely fragrant, intense and pure nose. Ripe, dark fruit has flushed completely with that cool sense of mint and the creaminess of American oak, just as the tannins have fused completely, presenting a serene, elegant flow that creates a gorgeous aromatic unity. This comes with magnetic, gravitational pull that draws you in; close your eyes and you are in Australia. A wine of immense finesse and elegance, of immense youthfulness and expression at 35 years of age. Wow! (AK)

Bin 704 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix.

This is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley made by Penfolds.

Full bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity and mouthfeel. Rich and extracted.

Showing black cherries, sweet plums, cedar, licorice, chocolates, herbs, spices, earth, light vegetables, tobacco leaf and peppercorn.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 3 hours of airtime. Gets earthier as it opens up.

Nicely balanced and fruit forward. Big and opulent.

Still young and will continue to mature in the next 8 years.

Robert Parker 94 points. Wine Enthusiasts 95 points.

Good by itself or with food. Will pair nicely with a big piece of steak.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$70.

It’s still a little jarring to see the Penfolds label on a Napa wine!

Grange Bin 95 Shiraz 1999

The times I helt a bottle like this in my hands, I can probably count on only one hand. Even for Delectable this is a rare occasion because it didn’t know how to correctly recognize it. When a wine connects like this, lifts you off the ground and takes you to a beautiful place, you know it is good. Intense, but perfectly balanced, so many instruments playing that still echo for minutes in a lingering finish. 26 years old yet so vibrant and wild with dark punchy fruits encapsulated by aged mahogany wood that released different flavors every time I took a sip… yeah… life is good. Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Nice aromas of mint (not positive but this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is probably mainly from Coonawarra) and cassis, black currant aromas. Medium bodied with an inner core of latent strength, inherent in most Penfolds Reds. Tastes way younger than 13 years and will cellar for at least another 10 to 15 years or more. Postscript: I thought this statement was appropriate from Penfolds First Chief Winemaker and the creator of Grange, Max Schubert said, “Penfolds different cuvées may differ in character Year by Year, but all bear an unmistakable resemblance and relationship to each other. “ This is pertinent when tasting Bin 407. — 3 years ago
