Reserve Navigator Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Paired very nicely with steak. Soft tanin at the finish. — 7 days ago

Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon

Very supple. Lots of flavor. Few too many tannins for my taste. — 3 years ago

Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Le Petit Haut Lafitte Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

The estate dates back to the Crusades, and Scottish navigator, George Smith, the owner in the 18th century. He was followed by M. Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux, and then Louis Eschenauer, a famous wine shipper. In 1990, Daniel and Florence Cathiard now own the estate. Dark plum red with dark berry fruit aromas, herb and spice from young Cab vines. On the palate complex sweet black fruit flavors and cacao notes. Firm tannins, rich and full, lingering, mineral ending, unlike the ‘10 wait a few years. — 3 years ago

Strandveld Vineyards

Elim Syrah 2015

Strong mlf and smoke aromas, deep red colour, good balance of flavours with stewed blackberries, black pepper, and genuine clove flavours (as the label suggests!), nutmeg. High acid high tannin, good structure, you could keep for another 3-5 But hot to trot now. NB this was not navigator, it was 100% Shiraz — 3 years ago

Stonestreet Estate Vineyards

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1994

1994 was a big year in California... the Northridge earthquake, OJ, Apple's Power Mac, Netscape Navigator, Green Day's Dookie, and this Cabernet from Stonestreet. This is the only one that's still relevant today.

Upon opening I could tell there was plenty left in the tank. I had my concerns, though, with how brett-y and damp the initial funk it gave off was, but the fruit was showing through. It needed 45 minutes before it was noticeably better. The surprise was how much it continued improving over the next two hours, leveling off at style reminiscent of 1989 Left Bank Bordeaux... an entanglement of dried black cherry, coffee, graphite, pipe tobacco, and dried herbs with an edge of pine, but with a slightly more pronounced oak influence. The hint of damp earth remains to linger in the background. I'm not sure I'd risk it, but this could probably go another decade. Superb.
