2022/7/4 with kuro-shitabirame nitsuke, etc. This was a tricky one. The nose starts out very quietly - which I often find to be the case with AOC Bourgogne - even many of the best bottles. (Yes, there have been exceptions.) with time and coaxing glints of butter, nuts, lemon peel and stone emerge - this might benefit from a bit more bottle age, or at least a vigorous airing. On the palate there’s more to it from the start - some lemony bread pudding and stream stone. When looking for “bargains” (a very relative term) in Burgundy, going outside the Côte d’Or vs looking for hidden gems on the slope tends to yield different results. I’ve found more overtly pleasurable, blatantly lovable wines via the former - with the latter, you really have to dig into the wines to see what’s there. But I have had some great older bottles of the latter type, so I would love to see how this goes. — 3 days ago
Light, spicy and so well structured. Fairly austere for its category but will evolve with time. Subtle red fruit is still hidden, leads with mineral backbone and light grippy tannins. Would love to hold for a while — 7 days ago
Needed a whole day to become civilized. Stunning nose of blueberry, blackberry, graphite, granite and dark flowers. Some saddle leather as well. Also wet pottery clay. Palate is juicy and concentrated with terrific energy and thrust. Sappy and fresh with such fine grained tannins. Terrific layering and a soft density. So pure and deep. Elegant like only the best can be. Amazing balance and length. Age for 5-7 more years then watch out! — 10 days ago
Whoa. So unique- takes classic oxidative flavors and flips them on their head. Has a medIcinal, pungent, witchhazel quality on opening. At first was undecided but this won me over. Carries through to a mouth watering finish; resonant with not too much acid but terrific density and savory minerals. Silky, almost unctuous finish. — 5 days ago
Pinot-Noir (66%) and gamay (34%) blend, both gourmet and sophisticated. The nose, marked by aging, evokes Burgundy by its toasted-cherry-vertical side, while the gamay would recall Beaujolais on strawberry-vegetable, jovial, floral and peppery notes. It's accessible, crunchy, with chew (not or little filtered) it pinote on a wide arotic range. The approach of a real friendly wine, with a solid final.
— 6 days ago
Vintage 2010 | I cannot recall drinking this Château Thivin before. I was blown away with this twelve year old Côte de Brouilly, that I tasted next to Bordeaux CS/M and Argentinian CS. At the first sniff I thought it to be passed away… but with aeration - I tried from several bottles with a barbecue - it opened up and made a methamorphosis from frog to princess. Beautiful blackberry and other red fruit. Vibrant taste, not showing its age. Drinking supple and giving much joy. Song of praise for Gamay! — 4 days ago
At Auberge du Cep, Fleurie. With escargots and faux gilet de boeuf (R) and paté en croute and poitrine et cuisse de poulet avec vin rouge et champignons (L). Excellent. — 6 days ago
