Les Trois Sources Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2014

Had this a few times, but I was finally able to sit down and analyze it over an evening. Their only cuvée produced in 2014.

Upfront, rollercoaster aromatics initially…rich, then mellowed out with an hour of air. After a few hours of air, a much more ripe CdP profile came out. Great bridge wine from Cali GSMs to bigger CdPs. Deep red in the glass with aromatics of fig, brambly red and black fruits. On the palate, big but not unbalanced. No trace of brett. Soft fig, muddled underripe black cherry, garrigue (smoked herbs); lengthy finish. Kiss of black pepper. Big Grenache vibe here. Lovely with air. Probably best in the near term based on the fruit forward structure.

Vieille Vigne du Levant Extra Brut Grand Cru Champagne Blend 2011

What a beautiful nose. It's a "hamburger" where chalk and baked apples act as buns; honey, old bread, mushrooms and wet earth act as a filling. All that topped with iodine from the nearest sea. Deliciously mineral and sharp. Long aftertaste of lemon sorbet, wet cellar and sea breeze. Sophisticated, delicate and nuanced.

Delicious. It’s mostly Mourvèdre but it’s different than a Bandol in the it’s seems more open and a bit less structured. Lots of garrigue/roasted herbs/iodine on the nose. Dark berries underneath. Concentrated and very savory in the mouth. Very clingy and long. A fair amount of relatively soft tannin, with acids on the lowish side. Really good value, if you can find it.

UPDATE: Night 2 the palate is showing less savory and way more deep fruit. That suggests to me that this needs air of drink in the short term and also will age for a few years.
