Fantastic structure, with enveloping acidities and bass tannins. The set of aroma is incomplete, however, and does nor create the Nebbiolo magic. — 3 days ago

Vinding Montecarrubo

Il Piccolo Terre Siciliane Syrah 2018

Wow. Just wow. Silly good. Mineral and floral blast from the get go. Black currant, olive, smoke, tea, woodsy red and black fruit profile. Violets and lilacs and Mediterranean herbs unfurl in the glass over hours, along with complex fruit and spices. So crystalline, elegant, seductive. Light, but minerals are through the roof. And the clarity! This producer works magic with French varieties in Sicily and this feels unexpectedly about terroir.

Tasted alongside a great bottle of Foillard Morgon, which this demolished. Amazing find from

Thanks. I had so many naysayers when I introduced this estate as they all wanted me to sell Sicilian grapes. But Peter knows what he is doing and if you zoom out you see Sicily has the best terroir for Syrah outside the Northern Rhone. Glad you enjoyed.

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Back to 1982 and this lovely LLC. Tons of cassis, spice, blue fruits, clove and this ethereal quality that makes 82 feel like magic in a bottle. The tannins are completely melted but this wine is layered with texture with just a hint of sweetness on the palate. I think I prefer the 1989 LLC just a tad more as there’s more complexity on the bouquet, but this is just a magic bottle. — 8 days ago

Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 1984

I know this sounds crazy, but one of the magic-of-success to this bottle is that the cork of this 37 yro wine was as dense and sturdy as the day it was enclosed. …a little tired age, but great cherry, strawberry, blackberry, mesquite. Drink now! Very good! — a day ago

Grand Vintage Toscana Vermentino Viognier 2010

Wow, genius stuff. Deep yellow, so many flowers, petrichor, such incredible density and salinity. Fresh, so complex, salty as hell. Almost oily but not viscous. Delightful and profound. Feels like this will only get better.

Has the magic quality of great Italian whites where the vibrancy is all mineral and textural and not acid.

Exquisite. Well balanced, subtle, and nuanced. So much to like about it. Great for sipping and enjoying crostini and equally marvellous when paired with a good rib eye. — a month ago

Vincent et Tania Carême

Terre Brulee Swartland Chenin Blanc 2019

Hits all the boxes for chenin. Citrus, floral notes, lanolin/beeswax and nice textural weight with lively acidity. Seems like the producer understands the grape from the Loire so well that they are making magic in South Africa! — 6 days ago
