Brasserie Dupont

Saison Dupont

There's a great video on YT on what a Saison is. In short, it's a farmhouse ale (pale or sometimes red) that was historically served to farm workers as a clean source of hydration. Without any distinctive characters and lower in alcohol then, the "Saison" only really gained it's signature when the house in question came into the equation. Also, based on my research, the checkered "Vielle Provision" yellow labels are the export labels.

As it was here, the Dupont Brewery's Saison is generally cloudy, very carbonated via bottle conditioning, zesty and spicy, bitter with a hint of sour, and a dry hoppy finish. For me, this is truly "The beer for all seasons" - the flavours are just so versatile. Perfect for a warm summer afternoon in the park, yet complex enough to pair with a 3-star dish.

Clonakilla

Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2018

Holy smokes! This was phenomenal. I knew there was quite a bit of hype with the 2018 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier on release (96-99 points from the usual suspects), but I didn't think it could live up to it. It sure did though, and I'd even go so far to say that this was the best young Shiraz I've had this year, both southern and northern hemisphere included. The perfume was just plain intoxicating - fresh red cherries, plums, violets, and roses, with a lovely touch of savoury spice, pepper and meat. However, that was just the cherry on the cake because the palate really knocked it out of the park. Super fine texture with tannins that are just made of pure silk. There's serious power and persistence here, all delivered in a precise and elegant package. The flavours are pure and delineated, with a long chalky, acid-driven finish that I absolutely adore. Surely a wine that rewards the patient. One for going deep on. — 24 days ago

Victoria Park

South Australian Shiraz 2018

Color of dark purple. Nose of tobacco leaves, ripe berries, some lavender, a bit raspberry, and strength of alcohol. Taste is concentrated, silky, with subtle sweetness and zest, vanilla, leafy note, a bit cocoa. Aftertaste is also smooth with more zest, some strength of alcohol, and cocoa note. Round no edge, enjoy her now. — a month ago

Contra Costa County Red Table Wine 2017

Alder Yarrow
9.6

There’s this expression that has arisen in the wine industry in the past decade - “crushable” or “smashable” wines, wines that All but demand you drink another glass and another until you realize sadly that you’ve drunk the entire bottle and you desperately want another. I’ve had my share of such wines, but this is my new favorite “gimme the whole bottle” font of deliciousness. @ownrooted has hit it out of the park with this mixed-black field blend of 1920’s-planted vines in decomposed granite sand. Berries, herbs, earth and an incredible saline kick gives this wine mouthwatering “come hither” appeal. I wish I had 24 more bottles. — 17 days ago
