Tobacco, mint, superbly mineral. A bit acrid and super young. Big tannins and a bit hot. Needs time.

perfume of dark berries, fig, baking spices & tobacco ~ the dark berry flavors lean a touch jammy but are in check by a quick pop of crunchy red fruit, some Asian spices, and a hint of Mediterranean herbs ~ plush mouthfeel w soft dry finish ~ lovely #SuperTuscan to follow next 15 yrs!

Aug 20th, 2020Today I had the pleasure of having the 2011 Tenuta Dell' Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. A beautiful expression of the "Ornellaia" and you would never know that it is 7 years old, it seems a lot younger than that.
On the nose the black fruit is very prevalent with black cherry, black raspberry, black currant, licorice, menthol, herbs, chocolate, pencil shavings and dusty soil.
On the palate the dark fruit continues through with black cherry, black raspberry, black currant, licorice, violet, coffee, spice, smokey oak and rich soil.
A well balanced full bodied wine with medium + electric acidity and medium + mouth coating sandy tannins that leads to a long medicinal cherry finish. Have a great weekend and please be safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Initially a bit monolithic, after an hour decant the nose was sour cherry kirsch and utterly intoxicating. From entry to its incredibly long finish, velvety smooth, feminine and lithe, loaded with shades of cherry, camphor, iodine and dark chocolate-laced espresso. Just enough lively tannins to keep it taut but without a discernible crease let alone a hard edge. This was possibly the finest Super-T and among the best wines I’ve ever tasted.

1 person found it helpfulMar 21st, 2021A stunning wine, the 2017 Ornellaia offers a captivating interplay of richness and energy. Picking early was the key. Young vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc were harvested in August for the first time ever. In the glass, the 2017 offers up an enticing mélange of mocha, cedar, tobacco and licorice, with soft curves that add to its sensuality and allure. The 2017 is sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tend to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone. In a word: superb! (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)
