Classic Besucastel! I first visited this property in 1987, and the Brett character was unmistakeable. This 1990 is aging extremely well. Strong Brett aromas, but the fruit is also strong and in balance. If you are one that thinks Brett is an unforgivable flaw, you will hate this. Great Chateauneuf from a great vintage! Celebrating my son’s 33rd birthday tonight (1993 wasn’t a great vintage in CdP!) with a perfectly grilled NY steak. I am very pleased with this wine

I have many tasting notes for Beaucastel on Delectable dating back nearly 10 years ago (504 weeks). Always has been a favourite and I had the pleasure of having a guided tasting with my wife and 2 children some years ago at the winery. This wine from the warm 2015 vintage had plenty of ripe black fruits like Blackberry and plum - also herbs and pepper. This Cuvée used all 13 permitted varietals. This was the first of 3 bottles. Next in a year or two. I actually slightly preferred the 2016 Clape Renaissance had over the weekend. I realise the Clape is northern Rhone but thought I would mention it.

1995 Beaucastel.
Touch of very old balsamic on the nose is tucked deep inside coffe rye, sage, loose tobacco, dried strawberry, black cherry, African violet and rosemary rubbed, grilled rack. Dark chocolate, espresso, dried violet, maduro tobacco, blackberry, cassis, and black pepper. Alive and well with great density despite melding smoothness and tannin integration. In a very sweet spot now!

Bright red nose of strawberry and cherry, hint of mushroom. Where other 20+ yr beaucas have gone Burg on me this was luscious and rich, dark red plum jam, earthy and creamy compote. Old leather. Bottle went fast but hung in nicely… I just can’t say whether this will get better but with one last bottle I’m gonna wait and see cuz I love how these evolve.

Charred and tarry earth, dark leather, fire scorched clay, cinnamon, burnt brown sugar, graphite, smoke, dark, tart cherry, black olive, savory, brittle, and scorched nettle. Elegant mouthfeel and brooding complexity. Like a blackened aged steak. Really provocative!

I was expecting more brett, which in old Beaucastel, I don’t mind at all. Clean, relatively fresh, and singing a surprisingly light and airy song, for Chateauneuf.
