La Fenice Risorge Sicilia Nero d'Avola 2016

I have a strong preference for Tuscan and northern Italian wines so I was a bit leery of this Sicilian #nerodiavola. Much of the impact is on the heady cassis aroma. With that sniff I’m expecting a syrupy fruit bomb but there’s a surprising balance of acidity and a touch of sour cherry that carries through the finish, mixed with some dark cocoa bitterness and firm tannins. I think it’s much better once it’s been opened for a day. — 6 years ago

SP68 Terre Siciliane Nero d'Avola Frappato 2014

On a big #Sicily kick of late, this is a step or two up from yesterday in complexity and class. Another steal at $22-25 this is also a blend of Nero di Avola and Frappato. The nose started out reduced, but the palate was clean. The nose grew leaps and bounds after an hour to a fresh mix of red fruit perfume ala Burgundy, fresh cut flowers, and a little wet stone funk. The palate is light as a feather, fresh and consistent with bursts of blood orange, cherry, subtle spice. The finish streams on with excellent acidity and fine, though quite firm, youthful tannin.

Opaque with a deep ruby core and blood red rim. Med intensity and complexity on the nose showing meat, leather, black pepper, stewed date and plum, and very ripe strawberry and huckleberry. The body was full on the palate with med + tannin, high abv, and med - acid leaving the structure a touch flabby. Med complexity showing some ripe fruit, bitterness, and earthy and medicinal notes.
