Today's wine we opened was the 2014 Gaja Barbaresco. This wine is everything you would expect from the Gaja family wineries and from Barbaresco in the Piedmont region of Italy.
The nose has wonderful rich red fruit of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, currant, licorice, spice and dusty earth.
The palate has an elegant finesse of red fruits, maraschino cherry, red raspberry, strawberry, red currant, spice, licorice, a hint of pepper and rich earth.
This wine is medium bodied that is well balanced with medium + acidity and medium + fine grained tannins that lead to a long fruit filled finish. Have a wonderful weekend and please be safe with all the weather that is happening around the country. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷 — 6 years ago
Wow: what a wine. Huge step up in depth, body and complexity from the Rosso 2016. Epic old school Nebbiolo nose of tar, roses, high toned mid season cherry. Old library and book aromas. Smells like a old academic’s study. Awesome. Palate is deep, rich and so so pure. Wow. Super explosive and rich fruit (2013!!) and incredible layered depth. Such length and persistence with deep red and black cherry fruit and terrific freshness. Really high quality tannins here. Brilliant. — 6 years ago
For the money, this is my favourite Barbaresco as it always delivers @ a great price and the latest 2015 doesn’t disappoint either at £30 😉 Drink well young as these do but will get better 👍 A vintage not to miss!

Recovering from a horrendous cold that I’m pretty sure I got from walking the streets of Paris last week, I decided to venture out for a “treat yourself” Monday night dinner back in Chicago.
You know that song lyric that goes, “whatever Lola wants, Lola gets”? Well, not in my case. I did want a French wine solely based on nostalgia, but settled on an Italian in a French restaurant.
With one nostril passage opened, I was able to get a very overpowering bouquet of tar (which by the way has been on my bucket list of aromatics to smell- so happy I can cross that off), earth floor, mushrooms, cedar and a bit of menthol.
Tannins are very much soft and nonexistent in this bottle- full bodied with high acidity. Medium garnet color, which was surprising based on the age. I didn’t find this as complex as some Barolos I’ve had in the past, but still found it very enjoyable. On the palate, a very surprising sweet ripeness of red plum that doesn’t linger long on the tongue. Overall- not bad for a Monday. — 6 years ago

Fragrant red berries, fading flowers, dried herbs and slatey minerality intermingles in this aged yet very vivid mountain Nebbiolo expression. Elegant palate offering a mature mouthfeel with resolved yet present tannins and fresh acidity. Lingering finish. Gorgeous wine! — 6 years ago
