Willamette Valley

Rollin Michael Soles

(RMS) Willamette Valley Brut Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2015

The ‘RMS’ Rose Sparkling Wine is a limited production bottling by superstar winemaker, Rollin Soles, who first began making this style of Oregon sparkling wine in 1987. The nose is highly perfumed with red rose petal, guava puree, teaberry and melon tones that fill the aromatic profile. The palate is refined as there is a wonderful elegance and seamlessness to this beautiful Rose Sparkling Wine. Red fruits and lighter earthy and citrus rind notes dance with the bright sense of minerality on the palate. While refined, this wine has some seriously good weight. A stunning wine that is truly one of the best of its kind, I can imagine this great bottling will cellar well for two decades. But why wait? Drink 2019-2035- 95 — 6 days ago

Domaine Serene

Monogram Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Monogram is a project initially started by Domaine Serene owner Ken Evenstad and the 2014 version is a simply breath-taking release. The Monogram is a limited production wine that is a barrel selection of what Ken and winemaker Michael Fay consider to be the choicest of lots. The wine is massive and brooding on the palate, showing a wonderful combination of dark and red fruits alongside wonderful earthy nuance —black truffle and peat moss — which all come into play. The wine finishes exceedingly long with dark fruits and minerals lingering on the stunning finish. This is a simply marvelous Pinot Noir which has the potential to evolve for decades. Opened a few fun bottles to celebrate my birthday this past weekend. Cheers to 31!

Pale yellow in the glass. Fruit is very bright...lemon, underripe peach, and limestone aromatics. Quite strong acidity upfront...reminiscent of a nice Chablis. Because of the structure and acidity, I think this is best enjoyed slightly warmer than cellar temp. It rounds things out. Definitely not an overoaked Chardonnay, but just a kiss of it to keep it from being racy. Lemon zest and caramelized green apple highlight the finish. I’d have no problem holding these another year or two, but great now if warmed up slightly.

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

Stunning and better than most winery’s top bottlings, the 2017 ‘Willamette Valley’ Pinot Noir is another sensational wine made by one of the most underrated winemakers in North America, Brian Marcy. The nose is seductive and highly perfumed with rose petals, guava puree, cigar ash and suggestions of peat moss that all build in the glass. The wine shows off a downright sexy texture, showing a great combination of weight and minerality. Guava puree, red raspberry cordial, blood orange zest and white truffle flavors all dance on the palate. A seriously good wine, this will continue to cellar well over the next fifteen years. Red Hills Estate Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2016

Sourced entirely from the Red Hills Estate, this wine was aged in 54% French oak for 13 months prior to bottling. The wine shows nice earthy undertones with forest floor and black truffle that combine with dark fruits on the nose. The palate shows a rich combination of red and dark fruits with sandalwood and wild mushroom flavors. Showing good range, this delicious wine has a long life ahead of it. Shea Wine Cellars

Shea Vineyard Block 23 Pinot Noir 2011

I think this one has done quite a bit of growing since the last note made here 5 years ago. This wine has a lot of very good structure, raspberry and bing cherry in the front, and herbal quality in the middle. Finishes with good acidity and grip with softening tannins. Not a lot of power here and was easily outdone by an Antikythera. Actually seems to be in a really good spot, not really too sure if this is capable of much more. — 2 days ago

Goodfellow Family Cellars

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2013

Art rock and exceptional Oregon Pinot Noir. One of the most creative and layered records I know. A different journey with each listen even after all these years. Great Pinot Noir is similar, always something to love and always something to learn. Acid driven fresh example from Goodfellow here. — 6 days ago

Lange Winery

Three Hills Cuvée Pinot Noir 2002

Now quite evolved at nearly twenty years of age, the 2002 Lange Estate ‘Three Hills Cuvee’ marvelously showcases this incredible vintage in Oregon as the wine is showing brilliantly right now. The palate is plush and dense, showing wonderful range and tension. Black fruits, citrus rind, pomegranate seed and black truffle. Complex and delicious, this is right in its sweet spot. The wine shows good mid-palate richness and is nowhere near finished as this will cellar well for the next decade. Drink 2019-2028- 93 — 12 days ago
