Boekenhoutskloof

Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Vintage 2022 | much character! Purple rim. Cassis, leather. Infanticide but so much potential. We tasted the wine after popped and pour, I am sure with a few hours decanter my appreciation would be + 0,2. The wine screams for food, as tannins are very present now. — 6 days ago

Ha! Had this last week in Cape Town! It was good, balanced, rich but couldn’t quite connect with it because it was so tanniny

Not quite as good as the 2018, which The winemaker admitted at a tasting, but still first rate. A decent match for the traditional Thanksgiving dishes. — 7 days ago

Kanonkop – Kadette Pinotage Rosé 2022
Stellenbosch – South Africa 🇿🇦

Overview:
Crafted from Pinotage, a grape born from crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault, this rosé highlights the unique South African innovation with a refreshing, modern expression.

Aromas & Flavors:
Delicate red berries, watermelon, and pomegranate on the nose, with crisp citrus undertones. The palate follows through with juicy red fruit, a whisper of floral notes, and a refreshing mineral streak.

Mouthfeel:
Light, bright, and energetic. Crisp acidity keeps it lively, with a clean, thirst-quenching finish.

Food Pairings:
Excellent with grilled shrimp, sushi, light salads, or simply as a refreshing aperitif on a warm day.

Verdict:
A distinctive rosé that showcases the brilliance of Pinotage beyond its traditional red wine style. Juicy, crisp, and not so common, a refreshing take on a proudly South African grape. Cheers!

Did You Know?
Pinotage was created in 1925 by South African scientist Abraham Perold, who crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsault (locally called Hermitage). While often debated for its red wine style, Pinotage has found new life in rosé and sparkling versions, loved for their vibrancy and freshness.

21 Gables Pinotage 2020

Spier – 21 Gables Pinotage / 2020
Stellenbosch – South Africa 🇿🇦

Overview
A benchmark Pinotage from one of South Africa’s oldest wine estates, Spier (est. 1692). This single-varietal Pinotage highlights both Stellenbosch terroir and the estate’s commitment to sustainability and vegan-friendly practices.

Aromas & Flavors
A concentrated nose of ripe blackberry, plum, and mulberry intertwined with smoky mocha, sweet spice, and a touch of earthiness. On the palate, dark fruit depth melds seamlessly with cocoa and subtle oak.

Mouthfeel
Full-bodied yet polished, with smooth, integrated tannins and a long, velvety finish. Rich and powerful, but retaining freshness that keeps it balanced.

Food Pairings
Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, smoky barbecue ribs, roasted root vegetables, or aged Gouda. A natural partner for bold and savory dishes.

Verdict
An exceptional Pinotage that balances tradition with finesse. It showcases why Stellenbosch is considered the spiritual home of the grape, and why Spier remains a leader in South African fine wine.

Did You Know?
Pinotage is South Africa’s signature grape, created in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsault (then known locally as Hermitage). Spier’s “21 Gables” line honors the Cape Dutch heritage architecture of the estate.

🍷 Personal Pick Highlight
A jewel of Stellenbosch. This vintage shows remarkable balance and depth, one of those rare Pinotages that leaves a lasting impression and deserves a spot in any serious collection.
