Bramaterra Red Blend 2016

I can't praise Noah enough for the work they do. This is a spectacular Alto Piemonte. Its full of bright fruit acid herbs sweet tobacco menthol. Its everything I want from the north. — 3 years ago

Dellamesola Coste della Sesia Rosso Nebbiolo Blend 2019

Fresh, balanced, Nebbiolo blend from Alto Piedmont. Medium bodied with a pure Nebbiolo flavors. Had it while making polenta with a sausage sauce- had to put it aside so there would be some left with the meal. I could drink a lot of this. — 5 years ago

Coste della Sesia Croatina 2013

The Swiss Army knife my father gifted to me in 2002 on a trip to Niagara Falls has been a prized object in my life. From etching initials into tree bark to camping to building furniture to opening bottles of wine, this glorified knick knack has transcended that category for me and will always have its place on my desk wherever I may be.

Rich and creamy bouquet. Black pepper and vanilla and unusually, goat cheese.

Light in terms of tannins, but a medium to high acidity makes this stand out. Intense red cherries. Packs a punch berry fruit up front, the acidity rushes in at the midpoint and then ends with a slight, yet welcome, astringent note.

Vernice Flapper Girl Piedirosso

You could say this is v.nice. Ok, this wine is fantastic. Oak, vanilla, cocoa, leather, cooked jam on the nose. Dry, tannic, so fruity with plums, strawberry, and raspberry. Had the primitivo from this winery and they clearly know what’s up. Would love to have again, preferably every day until I croak. — 3 years ago

Val Nero Rosso Dell'Umbria Sangiovese

Served to double-blind after a lineup of heavy hitters from Piemonte. This grabbed my attention from the beginning. Sure, it was an obvious outlier but there was an undeniable quality about it that was arresting. After a couple of swirls and a sip, my first guess was Tempranillo...but then the color wasn’t deep enough...so I quickly moved on to Sangiovese...but I wasn’t sure from where. Ruby in color and very attractive in the glass. The bouquet was powerful with red cherries, spices, and dried herbs and the palate didn’t disappoint either with ripe cherries and Mediterranean spices. Structure is there with everything in its rightful place.

When this was revealed to be Anne-Santi’s “Val Nero”, an Umbrian Sangiovese, I can’t say I was terribly surprised as this sort of reminded, in some respects, to Paolo Bea’s “Pipparello”; just a notch or two below. Never the less, this was a head turner for all of the right reasons. 100% Sangiovese produced with a philosophy of minimal intervention. This producer uses no oak; choosing stainless steel and amphora instead, though, I’m unsure whether this bottling sees any of the latter as very little information is available.

Aglianico dei Colli Aglianico del Vulture 2011

The nose was dark and beautiful, showing spiced cherry, plum, dried orange, and crushed violets.  On the palate, I found tart black fruits, inner floral and herbal tones, with energizing acidity matched by fine tannin.  It finished intensely structured on dark fruits, undergrowth and hints of ash.  This needs time, but I’m already loving it. #collisioni17 — 9 years ago

Il Rosso Dell'Umbria 2018

This one took an hour or so to open up, but once it did it was amazing! Baking spices and dark fruit on the nose and palate. The varietal composition for this wine seems to vary by vintage, but this '18 was all merlot. Funny, this bottle was a substitution for a different one that ended up being out of stock. I think I enjoyed this one more than I would have enjoyed my first choice! 100% Merlot. 2/5/23. — 4 years ago

Il Bianco dell'Umbria Grechetto Blend 2017

Last fall, I had the distinct pleasure of tasting a wine from AnneSanti for the first time. On that occasion, it was the Rosso, served blind. It ended up being one of the more memorable wines of 2020! On this occasion, I was presented with the Bianco (not blind). The wine was very light in color. On the nose, minerals, linen, chamomile, white flowers, stony, citrus and honey. On the palate, I found it to be quite brisk but in a very good way with light stone fruits and citrus notes. There was really nice persistent acid with a long, mineral driven finish that worked so well with the smoked trout. This is a fantastic aperitivo. I want this wine outdoors on a warm day with Gabin, dZihan & Kamien and Gotan Project playing in the background accompanied by light Mediterranean fare and, most importantly, some good mates. Overall, having now tasted two wines from this producer, I am eager to try them all. — 5 years ago

Real fun, light-hearted, easily approachable. Your new friend who gets your humour. Del monte fruit cup, dried pineapple, candied ginger. Soft acidity, a bit viscous / oily mouthfeel. Sneaky 13% alcohol - where did you come from?! Sicily you're so nice I like you more and more all the time. ☀️🍍 — 9 years ago
