C³ Red Rhone Blend 2019

The 2019 C3 is composed of equal parts counoise and cinsault with carignane rounding out the blend. Having the former two in the lead gave this one the aromas and flavors of cherry pie, as well as notes of pomegranate and lingonberry. Very fresh, and an excellent choice to go with our bison hot dogs on the grill! 40% Counoise, 40% Cinsault, 20% Carignane. 5/30/22. — 7 months ago

Vaupessiot Irancy Pinot Noir

Winston Jones

If you’re sleeping on wines from Irancy, it’s time to wake up. Irancy servers up wines of character. Fairly complex wines that are so easy to drink. Cherries of all persuasions, black raspberry, rhubarb, along with baking spices, nice acidity and structure make this wine worth exploring. — 6 months ago

Bernard Levet

Améthyste Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2016

Surly and reductive upon opening, smacking of leathery barnyard, but there is a sleeping giant below, emerging with notes of blackberry liqueur, black pepper, and smoke. Voluminous. Considerable upside with age (unless the Brett takes over), but for now, give it plenty of air. — 8 months ago

Zeitgeist Cellars

Sleeping Lady Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2018

Delectable recognized the the Zeitgeist bottle, but as the picture illustrates, we shared three different wines. ‘18 Zeitgeist Cab Franc, ‘05 Chateau Leovile Barton, and a ‘66 Mission Haut Brion. Great time talking business and drinking wine on a sunny March afternoon @ Taylor’s Wine Shop. We all thought the ‘66 was past its prime. The ‘05 was awesome and I thought the ‘18 cab franc had nice fruit and plenty of complexity. — 3 months ago

Brut Sekt Saar Riesling 2015

Found these in the cellar, sleeping longer than I meant. Would they be over the hill?

Color is a nice medium golden and the bubbles are small and persistent

👃Pronounced minerality on the nose with grapefruit and apples. Smells rich

👅 Picks up momentum with air and warming. Mostly simple flavors of apples and grapefruit but with very nice slatey minerality. Slight sweetness, nice balance, refreshing acidity, and tight bubbles. Simple, easy drinker

Works with food or it is tasty by itself much in the way a cold beer is tasty and refreshing

Hasn’t lost a step since release

AXR Napa Valley

Premiere Napa Valley Sleeping Denali Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

One of my favorites from Premiere Napa Valley 2020 #pnv20 #pnv2020 #napa only 5 cases produced. “A blend of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from two of the best AXR Napa Valley blocks
50% from Sleeping Lady Vineyard in Yountville and 50% from Denali Vineyard in the hills of St. Helena
100% barrel fermented from our finest barrels utilizing native yeast; unfined and unfiltered
Reflection of Jean Hoefliger’s pursuit to create a wine to push the envelope of Cabernet Sauvignon

AXR is a winery that pays homage to the past at their historic estate in St. Helena. AXR, named after the rootstock which succumbed to phylloxera, left the California wine industry a blank canvas. This was a crossing of the past and future of the wine industry as we know it. AXR has given winemaker Jean Hoefliger this same blank canvas. Jean is driven to push the envelope, challenging not only winemaking but life in general. With an insatiable appetite for art, philosophy and good discussion, Jean thrives when his creativity and passion is left unbound by conventional thinking.

Clarendon Hills

Hickinbotham Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Presented double-blind. The wine appears deep garnet with an opaque core. There appears to be a slight amount of sediment but otherwise no visual signs of age. On the nose, a beguiling mix of black, blue and red fruits with a pronounced hit of tobacco, green bell pepper, purple flowers, earth and baking space. On the palate, the wine is dry with very firm tannin that I would place in the medium++ category. Medium+ acid. The fruit set is confirmed along with the aforementioned non-fruit characteristics with some leather and earth for good measure. The finish very long and rich. While there is an undeniable amount of high quality fruit, I felt the non-fruit characteristics and the structure leaned more towards the old world. I called 2008 Paulliac from a classified growth. I didn’t even think about Australia! Anyway, this was awesome and came across almost youthful! I’ve long admired Roman’s work with Syrah…and now I know I’ve been sleeping on his Cabernet. This wine will continue to drink well for another decade+. — 3 months ago

@ESF agreed. And I think the issue that some have with them is that can come across over-the-top when young. They need lots of time to grow into themselves.

Yup, the wines are so dense & concentrated they evolve really slowly, but I’ve had new release that are very polished but take hours to unfurl
