Turn the Whole Thing Upside Down Grenache 2009

#AgedWineTuesday

Deep purple in color with a short, cloudy purple rim.

Strong nose of black currants, black plums, stewed cherries, dried figs, raisins, ginger, oak, eucalyptus, spices, green beans and peppercorn.

Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruit forward on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, tobacco, licorice, peppercorn, chocolates, herbs, spices and coffee.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This 16 year old Grenache from California feels like it peaked a few years ago, but still drinking beautifully. Elegant and rich.

The Syrah notes are very dominant, especially right out of the bottle.

Complex and interesting, with a beautiful nose. Extracted and fruit forward.

Robert Parker 96 points.

Needed 2 hours to open up, and delicious by itself as a sipping wine.

A blend of 84% Grenache, 11% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre.

15.6% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$330.

Stockholm Syndrome Grenache 2010

Crazy bottle. Opens for 12 hours before dinner. Started mostly secondary…mushroom, truffle, leaves with some dark fruit hiding out. In the next hour a core of dark raspberry, almost chambord popped out. Tannins tame. Great balence of of aged secondary and ripe and extracted dark fruit..excellent — 2 months ago

Trouver l'Arène Syrah 2015

2015 vintage. Opened with a Durand, decanted with minimal sed, and tasted after 20 minutes and one hour. Decided woofer. Darker than the proverbial soul of a hit(wo)man...er...moonless night. Slight amount of initial, buy-in with the merest hint of tartness before slipping into the classic (arena), crunchy rock solo (go with your favorite-so many good ones) on repeat. Richness. Structure. Depth. Levity. Self-awareness (just messing). Power. Nuance. Another 15-spot wouldn't hurt as this be a relative infant currently and, in another 15 years, it's likely still too youthful. 10.05.25. — 18 days ago

Had a few of these, drank one on release. Obviously way too early but I was curious. Flipped the rest on Auction

Another 15. Lord. I thought I was holding to long already.

@Norman It’s über-drinkable currently but still primary flavors/impressions. If you want secondary/tertiary flavor flavs, gonna need another mandatory 15 year sentence.

Touché Eleven Confessions Vineyard Estate Syrah 2012

2012 vintage. Decanted and tasted after 1.25 hours open. Heavy body. Always too soon/early with these wines, whether white or red. Likely shouldn't be approached or flirted with for another 15 years to properly evaluate. Some chunky bite but mostly über-smooth bark. From what I'm told, they own the copyright for the stunning bottle shape style. 05.30.25. — 5 months ago

B 20 Syrah

blackberry, kalamata, assuaged tannins, in retrospect would’ve decanted a few hours ahead. — 9 months ago

Rattrapante Eleven Confessions Estate Grenache 2012

2012 vintage. 15.6 ABV but tasted like 14.7. Medium body. Decanted and tasted after 20 minutes and 2 hours. Slight amount of sed but not objectionable if poured into the proceedings. Mostly frontal fruit tasting with raspberry and strawberry flavors coming through predominantly. Relatively unexciting in the early going. Nice...but not exactly this year's girl. Tasting after two hours decanted...body upped to medium/medium-heavy body and a subtle cracked black peppercorn flourish all these promises of satisfaction. As with (nearly) all the wines from this producer, killed off at least a decade too early, likely two. Those disco synthesizers those daily tranquilizers...9.3.25. — 2 months ago

I am just an old school outdated purist with a preference for the yeast which sits on the grapes: At 15.6% i suspect a designer yeast is at play which survives these levels of %.

Piranha Waterdance Syrah 2014

Wow. Immediately sharp and powerful from the first pour. Sizzling and spicy with lots of length. Earthy and rich. Such a lingering joy! My only problem was an over whelming feeling of slowing myself to make it last. Phenomenal!! — 3 months ago

That's awesome! So what would it take to bring it from 9.9 to a 10? 😀

The Petition White Blend 2005

2005 vintage. 15.8% ABV. Smooth, delicious and concentrated. Has an easy decade left to spin tales of yore. Yet another ridiculous effort from a winery that embraces the impossible and ends up conjuring the magical. 03.19.25. — 7 months ago
