Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

2022 vintage. Decent Napa Cab. Heavy blackberry and plum on the palate, strong tannins, not too chewy. Fruit forward aroma with notes of leather and spice. Opened up nicely after the first 30-45 minutes. — a month ago

Lagier Meredith

Mount Veeder Syrah 2012

Blackberry, rich, ripe, dare I say still quite primary fruit, some mountain structure peaks through, nice balance, long finish, needs many more years of aging!! — 2 years ago

Trout Lily Ranch

Adam's Vineyard Chehalem Mountains Pinot Noir 2015

Delicious. Expressive and composed nose shows sappy cherry, moist loam, graham cracker spice, and a slight resiny note. Very Burgundian. In the mouth it’s quite elegant. Deep fruit in a bone dry package, lots of crushed stone minerality. Very long. Soft texture. Hint of porcini. The only quibble is that alcoholic heat peaks through a teeny bit. — 3 years ago

Santa Margarita Ranch Chardonnay 2020

Was expecting a California butter bomb but instead got a pleasantly aromatic Chardonnay that was mostly fermented on stainless steel. This is a nice and affordable wine for someone looking for an “in between” style. — 5 years ago

Paso Robles Zinfandel 2021

This wine is a medium-dark purple in the glass. Aromas of brambly cherry are adorned with anise, leather, pepper and clove notes. On the palate there is red fruit and oak spice with a savory coffee angle. The tannins are firm and the acidity is fresh. A lengthy finish leaves the savory aspect strongest. Pair with any beef or pork, or even a dish based in tomato sauce. — 3 years ago

Peaks & Tides

Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

This was good. It needs some time to open up and breathe for the full flavor to bloom. Once those sophisticated notes of berry, basil, and leather begin to tingle, I am reminded that Q3 taxes are overdue and the basement still needs formal radon testing. I will be having a second glass. Another good Aldi provision. — 5 years ago

Margarita Vineyard Chardonnay 2020

There is a lot of oak on first impression but then a lovely hint of lemon and pineapple come through with some golden apple and a cleansing note of flint and wet stone. This is medium bodied and medium alcohol (13.5%abv) and very nicely balanced. Definitely new world with that ripeness but the minerality gives it added complexity. Medium length, a good value — 5 years ago

Emmanuel Rouget

Cros Parantoux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

Emmanuel Rouget 2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux

A wine from the nephew of the Wine God (Henri Jayer). This is my first time trying this domaine. In my view, Méo-Camuzet’s Cros Parantoux leans more feminine and delicate, while Emmanuel Rouget’s style is more like “a sea of stars and a sky of galaxies”—more structural, more spirited, with an air of chivalrous boldness.

2014 should be a relatively approachable vintage, but indeed the first glass showed very tight tannins, vibrant and layered acidity, a pronounced herbaceous/green note, earthy minerality, very fresh and natural, with a bright and clean quality. The structure wasn’t broad or massive, but rather deeply intricate, precise, and penetrating.

After 1 hour of aeration, wild strawberry emerged, along with a mineral sense of wet earth after rain in the forest. Floral notes were not yet obvious; I looked forward to its further evolution.

After 2 hours open, the nose was no longer about thick jammy fruit, but a mix of different spices—like scattered starlight in a river of stars: cool, shimmering, accompanied by rose petals, wild strawberries, and the cool limestone minerality. The aromas don’t hit you head‑on but slowly unfold in the nasal cavity like the Milky Way. Once fully opened, I experienced its signature “silver bead of acidity.” The tannins are incredibly fine, like velvet, and the wine floats on the tip of the tongue—not heavy, but like silk gliding across the night sky. That concentrated mineral energy strikes the palate instantly, then dissolves into a long, lingering finish. The aftertaste lasts for tens of seconds, carrying notes of sandalwood, dried tangerine peel, and damp earth.

Half‑drunk, I felt as if I were drifting into a dream beneath the starry river.

Tenuta San Leonardo

Vette di San Leonardo Sauvignon Blanc 2019

An excellent white wine made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Taking its name from the imposing Dolomites mountain peaks which surround the San Leonardo Estate. Straw colored, dry with hints of white peach, mineral and acidity. An excellent Sauvignon Blanc surpassing most Chardonnay’s. Excellent pairing with roasted chicken. — 5 years ago
