Santo Negro

Bruno Giacosa

Santo Stefano di Neive Riserva Barbaresco Nebbiolo 1998

98 was not a great vintage and why Giacosa bottled the SS as a red label has long been a bit of a mystery. There’s a lot in this wine to like, and no reason to leave it sitting in the cellar. Fully mature, ample bricking, softer but still lively fruit, rich mouthfeel with classic sous bois, a bit of iron, red berry and herbal overlay, and soft maybe a bit overripe tannin. Lovely, but not near Giacosa’s most memorable SSRs. — 5 days ago

Nykteri Assyrtiko Athiri 2020

Vintage 2020 | Nykteri is the word for ‘staying up whole night’ in the local language. Santorini vintners harvest in the morning and press the grapes during night. Made of Assyrtiko, Athiri and Aidani grapes. Absolute very mineral. Very compelling wine that matured in barrels for three months. We drank it with shrimps dim sum and it made us happy. — 10 months ago

Gran Seleccion Cordon Negro Brut Cava Macabeo-Xarel-lo-Parellada

Nice straw yellow color. Small, delicate bubbles. Smells very fruity with tart apple and pear on the nose. Yum! More mellow than crisp, and had a nice lingering finish. Love. — 6 years ago

11 percent abv; a little lean but good aromatic intensity. Under ripe raspberry, cranberry, various crunchy red fruits. Med plus acid and a decent finish for a light bodied red. Could use 5-7 years to gain more earthy complexity. — 2 months ago

A Lisa Rio Negro Malbec 2022

Deep Ruby with aromas of ripe fresh berry fruits, spice and herb notes, has a splash of Merlot added to the Malbec. On the palate flavors of cherry and blackberry with notes of oak and black pepper notes. Fine soft tannins, great balance with acidity, long finish ending with juicy fruits and mineral notes. Good value! — 4 months ago

Cuvée delle Vigne Niche Santo Spirito Etna Bianco White Blend 2020

Super concentrated & quite aromatic. Salty beach pebbles, ripe apricots, but also a bit of salted caramel, tarte tatin and a lot of rocky, salty minerality. Intriguing.
Quite unctuous & rich on the palata, but also very fresh - zingy acidity, salty minerality countering the richness. This is definitely a food wine… but such an interesting one. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I love it!
