Les Vaucrains Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2017

No one got this right in the blind. Yours truly excluded, as I brought the bottle to lunch, but frankly, I wouldn't have identified it too if blinded. The 2017 Chevillon Les Vaucrains was perhaps atypically elegant for the producer and appellation (Chevillon looks a little different out of the blocks from what I remember), but it just goes to show the fallacy of generalization in wine (and the lack of our experience). Games aside, the wine was a great success and perfect with lunch's French fare.

Straight out of the bottle, the nose just hits you with black and blue fruits. Unfurls in the glass with aromas of earth, dark chocolate, smoke, and leather. Pure and precise on the palate, with a fine tannic backbone. The mouthfeel was very plush, which was a nice counterpoint to the strong minerality on the mid-palate. Sappy finish that just goes on and on. What a wine! Goes into the esteeemed category of "power without weight" for me.

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

This baby’s been ridden hard and put away wet, (literally), but the juice has persevered and then some. I remember when this bottle was $25. — 9 days ago

Glad to hear! I had a bottle a year back that got cooked somewhere along the line. Ah what could have been! Cheers!

Brut Robert James Russell RJR Champagne Blend 2009

Another solid vintage of this consistently excellent New England bubbly! Intense Aromas and flavors of baked apples with hints of grapefruit and vanilla. Dark gold color. Beautiful mousse and consistent tiny bubbles with pallet cleansing acidity. Buttery/creamy texture. So well made. Thank You, John P. — 11 days ago

Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2004

Reddish tawny with a hint of mahogany. Mostly translucent. Herbal nose. Notes of pine tree, red berries and some wood – and not much more than that. Has that pyrazine / lady bug affect, although not overly so – but it’s enough to hide elements like the Vosne spice and detract from what should be a high-end wine. — 9 days ago

DRC seemed to avoid the lady bug taint though few others did.

Weingut Robert Weil

Kiedricher Turmberg Trocken Riesling 2019

Sporting a killer nose that could only be German, leaping out of the glass with youthful vigour is the Kiedrich Turmberg 1er Lage Trocken from Weingut Robert Weil, a drop-dead gorgeous riesling from the Rheingau.

With great minerality, the nose features aromas of oyster shell, the freshest of lime zest, peach, cardamom, faint petrol and fresh cream. It’s a wine you can sniff for ages, but then it’s got somewhere to be. It veritably explodes in the mouth, that lime returning with a tongue-full of acidity and razor-sharp precision. Flecks of white pepper add a slight element of spice, while it races through the palate to a long, bone-dry finish.

A powerful, chiselled example of Riesling trocken.

This wine is all about subtlety and restraint. While 17 was a challenging vintage, there are no signs of that here. Pure mature black fruits on the nose and palate. Dense mouthfeel with viscosity and moderate sweetness. Tannins are integrated, while the acidity is relaxed. Drink this vintage now or over the next 3 years. — 4 days ago

Les Saint-Georges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2009

Les Saint Georges has always basically been considered the NSG Grand Cru, if there was one, and such prestige was more than evident with this bottle. It’s deep, intense and alluringly complex with a fantastic balance of fruit and earth expression. It’s bouquet is gorgeous as aromas of rose petals, morello cherries and forest floor leap out of the glass. It has a fantastic texture and mouthfeel and it just wraps around the palate in the best way. The finish is tremendously persistent with silky tannins and great energy. Fantastic bottle.
