Had a note. Got stuck in Delectable purgatory. Anyway, nose better a few years ago, palate banging today. Nose getting better with air. Damp earth. Cherries. — a year ago

Alban Vineyards

Reva Alban Estate Vineyard Syrah 2006

2006 Alban Estate Syrah Reva from the Edna Valley. A whopping 16.2% alcohol! Blacker than Midnight in moonless, starless sky. Telltale iodine Reva nose with blackberry jam, fennel and just a hint of oyster shell? A smokey, mineral-esque quality lurking in the background. Big and bold and luscious with more of that ripe, dark fruit, blackberry liqueur and cherry compote on the palate. Additional notes of graphite, black olives, a touch of smokey bacon, and that trademark Alban tar. Finishes with a salinity that just makes my mouth water. Wonderful silky texture. Positively chewy. Rich, concentrated and beautifully structured. John Alban has been cranking out these beauties for decades now, but never seems to garner the love he so richly deserves. I’m including myself here as I tend to forget about Mr Alban until I open the occasional bottle. Now you all know that Manfred is my main man, but hear me when I tell you that while you are mired in that seemingly endless SQN purgatory of a wait-list, do yourself a favor and grab some Alban. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. — 6 years ago

Addendum: I just realized that this is a Parker 100 pointer. And I can confirm that rating.

‘06 is the best Reva ever. Have one left and I’m always tempted to open it but also curious to see what this will taste like with some more age.

Clone 4 Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 2013

This next selection is bright and ripe-- and you are going to need this because your palette gets a little numb at some point during Thanksgiving. As a pick-me-up, this wine has cherries and some tobacco notes that I am going to use in that weird purgatory between the main meal and ALL OF THE PIE. — 8 years ago

Purgatory Merlot 2015

It's time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Here is a nice one from Napa Valley.

Ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose with blueberries, cherries, sweet raspberries, light cedar, vanilla, licorice, spices, light green vegetables, black pepper, graphite and beef jerky.

Full-bodied and smooth with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with cherries, oak, sweet strawberries, vanilla, licorice, spices, tobacco, chocolates and light vegetables.

Long finish with firm tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a very enjoyable Merlot from Napa Valley. Tangy and soft with nice complexity.

This 4 year old is drinking nicely now, and will be better in the next 3 to 5 years.

Good right out of the bottle and better after 3 hours of airtime.

Good by itself or with food. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

Thank you Sonny for sharing this with me.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$50.

Drink now or risk jumped shark. OUTSTANDING if slightly jaded. Paired with grilled skewered scallops/ bacon and artichokes (drawn salted butter). Die, Peasants! M. Antoinette and I await you in grape purgatory. — 8 years ago

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2018

This is the Quartz Creek Vineyard Chard which arrived today. Couldn’t give it the COVID purgatory garage 48 hour hold. Had to glove up and wipe r down to get into it. This one’s a total winner. Meyer lemon, minerals, saline, and white flint. Highly recommend. — 4 years ago

Le Purgatoire Limoux Chardonnay 2013

Le Purgatoire in English means "a purgatory". It's a rough chardonnay. Woody (smoked) and mineral with some floral scents. But there is also something elusive I can't recognize. — 8 years ago

Every ounce a Napa wine, but softer and gentler than some of its pricier friends. This property has always been in a bit of purgatory, but has amazing potential. — 8 years ago

Clos Roche Blanche

Touraine Cuvée Gamay 2014

$23. Temptress, meadow lark by moonlight, flitting about, trapped in my nostrils before delving into the unknown. You probe me, unbutton my coat, press me into my seat. This cannot last, this presence, this provocation, and yet here you are, smothering me. A full embrace. I am left in this boundless purgatory, shackled by the infinite you bear. The truth is somewhere at the end, in a puddle on the ground. Don't leave me lonely. — 8 years ago
