Earth driven wine with loads of dried tobacco aromas, dried rose petal, anise seed and black truffle. Kirsch liquor and cherry pit with vibrant tannins and acidly. Long persistent finish that lingers. — a month ago

Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2020

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2020 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills) is fabulous. In fact, the appellation wine is my favorite Pinot in this range. The combination of the sites, and a bit less stem influence than the vineyard designates, works so well. There's a bit more fruit, more mid-palate sweetness and better balance overall, in my view. All the elements are so well put together. All of this fruit is from Machado and Hapgood. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2022)

Serralunga d'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

The classico. It took about 6 hours of overnight slow ox to flesh out but when it did became very enjoyable. Rose petal, light red fruits, mint/spice. The learning curve on when to drink these is a constant exercise. — 2 months ago

California Syrah 2015

9.4

Forgot I opened one of these earlier in the year. Whoops. Wish I had more.

Hour decant, then consumed from decanter over the next 3hrs.

My note here is fairly similar to the 2014 note, but there is more concentration and power going on. Dark purple in the glass, with aromatics of both sweet oak as well as a kiss of whole cluster stem inclusion. Loads of dark floral notes, ripe blackberries, and smoked jerky. Large-scaled mid palate depth and richness of blue and black fruits with plenty of herbal flair and spice but it’s more iron fist in a velvet glove style. There’s black peppercorn and iron, as well as big central coast Rhône style with its rich and textural palate.

I love Syrah in all expressions. It’s natural to compare these wines to SQN (and Andremily), and rightly so. These are dialed up to 9, but pull back, whereas the others aren’t afraid of going to 11. No right/wrong answer, just style preference. I happen to love both.

I lean toward SQN but get the pull toward Andremily. I’ve not decanted these and may be they just need the air. Andremily always seems ready to go and to be you always sense the SQN power even if I don’t give it the required time. I always want a bit more from Lillian but it’s still delicious.

Barolo Nebbiolo 2017

Always impressed with this producers wines from top to bottom. His Monvigliero is legendary but his regular Barolo is drinking way above its weight class showing its whole cluster, red cherry, strawberry, savory spice, floral with rose petal, violet, leather & tobacco — 3 months ago

Tre Vigne Barbera d'Asti 2019

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2019 Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne is one of the hidden gems in Vietti’s stellar range. Crushed rocks, lavender, rose petal, mint, gravel and inky dark fruit all run through a racy, beautifully layered Barbera that will drink well right out of the gate. $20.00 (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, December 2021) — 2 years ago
