Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Pessac-Léognan Blanc White Bordeaux Blend 2007

Nez légèrement évolué sur lamande amère. Arôme inattendu de violette. Beaucoup de matière en bouche. Agrumes. Belle longueur et encore beaucoup de panache — 6 years ago

Paul Dethune

Cuvée à l'Ancienne Grand Cru Brut Champagne 2011

Exceptional depth and balance - this wine wears its grand cru status with panache. Quite youthful with red apple, lemon, biscuit, brioche, hazelnut and hawthorn flower. Substantial yet elegant. Beautiful presentation with at twine-sealed cork — 6 years ago

Domaine Roblet-Monnot

Taillepieds Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2015 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru shows a bit of reduction on the nose, eventually clearing to offer undergrowth and bay leaf infused red fruit. The palate is underpinned by firm tannin, impressive depth. Quite a complex and grippy Volnay with superb length. Pascal Roblet has really got a handle on this Volnay. I can see this ageing with style and panache. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Glenmorangie

12 Years Old The Lasanta Sherry Cask Extra Matured Single Malt Scotch

An excellent occasional tipple in winter. Glenmorangie are the masters of maturing in oak barrels which previously held other alcoholic beverages. They even mature in barrels that once held Sauternes. This Lasanta spent ten years maturing in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks before being matured for a further 2 years in Oloroso and PX Sherry casks from Jerez in Spain. This gives this single malt Scotch a sweet smoky slightly burnt nuance. — 3 years ago

Château Cantenac Brown

Margaux Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2015

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2015 Cantenac Brown displays more red fruit compared directly with the 2016: raspberry and wild strawberry intermingled with sous-bois and tobacco, violet aromas emerging with time. Lovely focus here, though not the panache of the following vintage. The palate is beginning to loosen up with lithe tannins, fleshy and harmonious, tart red cherries, allspice and clove with a grippy and quite persistent finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a wonderful Margaux that should drink a little earlier than the 2016. Tasted at the Cantenac Brown vertical at the château. (Neal Martin, Vinous, October 2022)

Daou Vineyards

Pessimist Paso Robles Red Blend 2021

Bought at Kauai Costco today…tag said 93 rating by one of the big raters. I wouldn’t score it that high at a food truck place in Koloa town. Drank out of cardboard coffee cups. If I had my nice stemware it probably would have scored higher. Under $20. It was OK to open our bottle at the dining tables. No adult beverages sold at any of the 3 food trucks. — 3 years ago

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2012 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was the first vintage with whole bunches (40%) and 18 months in barrel. It was the introductory vintage under current winemaker Guillaume Pouthier. This is much more enticing on the nose after the 2011: well-defined black cherries, cola, peppermint, light rose petal scents and a hint of marmalade that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, more freshness and tension than the 2011, and frankly, you would never be able to tell there was whole bunch here. This appears to be maturing with style and panache, but it will give another decade or more of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Les Carmes Haut-Brion vertical at the château. Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1975

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 1975 La Mission Haut-Brion has been hailed in some quarters as a high point for the estate in the Seventies. My own experience has been one of inconsistency, especially compared to the reliable and, in my mind, superior 1978. According to a half-dozen or so tasting notes from 2000 onward, the 1975 was always robust, dense and nearly impenetrable. One bottle at the vertical in 2008 finally lived up to high expectations, but a follow-up two years later felt charmless. This bottle is conspicuously deep in hue. The nose is backward at first, eventually revealing blackberry, iodine and light licorice scents; later, a touch of gaminess creeps in. The palate is full-bodied and full of sinew, with thick tannins framing the multilayered, ferrous black fruit. This is huge in terms of grip, and almost brutish toward the finish. It’s impressive in stature, but the 1978 possesses greater nuance and more panache. Tasted at a private dinner in Hong Kong. Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2021)

Dassai Sake Brewery

Dassai 39 Yamadanishiki Junmai Daiginjo Sake

Not always my favourite on the table, but always solid. Dassai's like the Penfolds of sake - producing high quality beverages at a scale that's accessible to the multitude. In 2013, Asahi Shuzo, Dassai's brewery, sold 1.14 million bottles of sake, which is peanuts compared to what Treasury does, but no mean feat in a struggling sake industry. For me, Dassai is at least large enough to have reached little ol' Kuching, and to have been one of my first encounters with a Junmai Daiginjo.

I've always found Dassai's quite rich and it's no different here. Exotic nose of melons, pineapple, candied fruits even. Palate's like a fruit punch, plush but toned back by herbaceous notes and some acidity. Clean, lengthy finish. Very approachable. The best drink on the table this time.

Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

Delectable Wine
9.6

The 2014 Montrose has a bouquet that exudes class and sophistication: pure and mineral-driven black fruit, cedar and pencil lead, hints of blueberry developing with aeration although it never impedes upon the sense of terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-tinged black fruit, filigree tannin, a sweet core of blackberry and boysenberry fruit with a satin-like texture towards the finish. There is obviously some high quality oak used here, but it is simpatico with the fruit. For Montrose, you might argue that this is more modern in style and yet it is undeniably crafted with real panache to create a modern classic. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
