Château Cantegril

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2019

Château Cantegril – Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle / 2019
AOC Barsac – Bordeaux, France 🇫🇷

Overview
A Grand Vin de Sauternes crafted by the Dubourdieu family in Barsac, this 2019 vintage blends the region’s classics: Sémillon dominant, Sauvignon Blanc, and a touch of Muscadelle. Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) weaves its magic here, concentrating sugars and intensifying aromas.

Aromas & Flavors
Lush notes of apricot, candied orange peel, and pineapple rise from the glass, layered with honey, acacia blossom, and a hint of saffron. The sweetness is deeply expressive but never cloying.

Mouthfeel
Silky and opulent, yet balanced by Barsac’s hallmark freshness and mineral tension. A luscious golden core with excellent length, pure heaven in a glass.

Food Pairings
Perfect with Roquefort, foie gras, or blue cheeses, but equally divine alongside fruit tarts, crème brûlée, or spicy Asian cuisine. For a daring contrast, try with fried chicken.

Verdict
2019 Château Cantegril is heaven on earth, an elegant and classic Barsac that shows the Dubourdieu family’s mastery. A wine that proves Sauternes and Barsac remain unmatched when it comes to liquid gold.

Did You Know?
Barsac AOC wines can legally be labeled either “Barsac” or “Sauternes.” Château Cantegril is often described as one of the “entry gates” to the Dubourdieu family’s sweet wine heritage, offering top quality at a more approachable level than their Château Doisy-Daëne.

🍷 Personal Pick Highlight: This is one of those wines that makes you stop mid-sip and smile, it’s just that magical.

Domaine de la Bongran

Cuvée E.J. Thévenet Viré-Clessé Chardonnay 2017

Nicely evolved from half bottle, with nutty aromas, ripe apple, a bit of orange blossom, a salty whiff, just a tiny hint of marcipan. So intriguing. Needs a moment in the glass to fully develop.
On the palate this starts off rich & very ripe but then the juicy acidity kicks in. And the minerality & the hint of tannin. Good depth & precision with over ripe lemons, orange peel marmalade and ripe yellow apples.
Good stuff!

Arianna Occhipinti

SP68 Bianco Terre Siciliane Albanello Muscat of Alexandria 2022

Worried it might be a little natty for my taste at first but the funk blows off quickly to reveal a fragrant & expressive wine—orange peel, orange blossom, fennel pollen, pumpkin and a gorgeous salinity.

It’s a wine that really sings with seafood. Had it with Provençal Cod with olives and fennel.

Her winemaking talent really shines in the texture—particularly the finish. Definitely a lot of skin contact here, but the tannins are elegant and the finish is crisp, salty and refreshing —no graininess or bitterness.

Like Stanley Tucci says to Arianna, “I could bathe in this wine”

We visited the winery last month. Like you, I am not a fan of too much skin contact in white wine. This and Elisabetta Foradori’s whites have just enough to add some texture and complexity without the bitterness on the finish that many have! By the way, we loved our visit there.

Charles Heidsieck

Brut Réserve Champagne Blend

Charles "Champagne Charlie" Heidsieck was one of the first to recognize the importance of the U.S. as a Champagne market. A blend with 40% reserve wines, fruit and floral bouquet, with orange blossom & yeasty notes. Fine bubbles, nice mousse, showing quality. Outstanding rich flavors of apple, pear and biscuit, well balanced, good structure, creamy. Long finish ending with toasty nutty oak & mineral notes. — 2 years ago

Château Rieussec

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2001

One of the bottles I provided for a co-hosting with Mark at the City Club wine group.

Always a treat to enjoy well-made 2001 vintage Sauternes. This was my first experience with Rieussec’s 2001. Deeply golden/amber in the glass. Aromatics fill the room with apricot preserves, honeyed lemons, orange marmalade, little bit of caramel. Bordering on bombastic on the palate, it stops just short of cloying. Commanding and opulent. Honeyed stone fruits, truffle honeycomb, roasted cashews. Excellent acidity. Obviously young, I’d love to revisit in 10-15yrs.
