One Beer Later

Enderle & Moll

Liaison Pinot Noir 2021

After a warm 2020 this 2021 is more backwards and classic and reminds me of the 2016‘s. The first bottle had a touch VA which blew off. Second one has no VA. Violets and a hint of roses. Robust beautiful cherry 🍒. Touch bark. This is a top vintage for them. Awesomeness in a bottle for a ridiculous low price for this quality. It’s hard to put the glass down - it is that good. So in this instance I do rate this higher than Lyle F. 3 days later on the Argon line - this is still exceptional elegant and unique. Gained weight and at the same time super elegant. What a wine. — 9 months ago

2022 is much better for me. Best since 18. 21 is nice but lacks some density.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1975

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 1975 La Mission Haut-Brion has been hailed in some quarters as a high point for the estate in the Seventies. My own experience has been one of inconsistency, especially compared to the reliable and, in my mind, superior 1978. According to a half-dozen or so tasting notes from 2000 onward, the 1975 was always robust, dense and nearly impenetrable. One bottle at the vertical in 2008 finally lived up to high expectations, but a follow-up two years later felt charmless. This bottle is conspicuously deep in hue. The nose is backward at first, eventually revealing blackberry, iodine and light licorice scents; later, a touch of gaminess creeps in. The palate is full-bodied and full of sinew, with thick tannins framing the multilayered, ferrous black fruit. This is huge in terms of grip, and almost brutish toward the finish. It’s impressive in stature, but the 1978 possesses greater nuance and more panache. Tasted at a private dinner in Hong Kong. Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2021)

Seavey Vineyard

Caravina Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Decanted 7 hours and then poured back into the bottle before service, 4 hours later. No formal notes. The 2019 “Caravina” is showing classic notes of black currants, tobacco, and baking spices with a gentle touch of vanilla. The finish is dry with significant structure. Already lovely with extended exposure to air, I’m looking forward to following the evolution of this wine for the next 10-15+ years. This remains one of Napa’s best values. — 3 years ago

Brouwerij Lindemans

Framboise Lambic Belgian Raspberry Beer

Sweet but tart raspberry forward beer that has a slight hoppy finish. The aftertaste takes a few sips to get used too probably because it drinks like a sweet wine first and leaves you with the yeast/hop taste on the exhale. Unexpected but never the less Delish. I buy this Lambic beer by the case. It has several other flavors like blueberry, and peach. Don’t expect it to have a alcoholic feel or taste. It’s only 2.5% alcohol which is practically only one step up from classic kombucha. I enjoy drinking this during a late lunch paired with a Italian sub and lime chips.

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2018

This was possible via one helluva birthday gift and is well outside of my typical wine realm, so take my tasting as something of an idiot amongst the laureate:
One small taste immediately after opening: very full bodied. Prominent chocolate and vanilla followed by dark cherry. Clove/allspice that becomes more prominent through the finish. After about 30-45min to open the chocolate in particular is muted. The clove/allspice is more noticeable later in the finish, and the fruit only seems bigger in comparison. The mouthfeel is incomparably velvety. If I ever have the opportunity I’d love to try a bottle with a little more age on it, but this was an incredible experience.

Château Gazin

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

AMAZING BORDEAUX that’s still able to shine, decanted, after a few hours of opening! In ritual notes of damp leather, subdued / dried fruits and felt past its prime. 2 hours later - completely blossomed into this robust, aged, beautiful almost “fruit forward” masterpiece with almost olive overtones. I’m sure it was a great bottle 10, 20, even 30 years ago - but now it’s almost better as it’s transformed into this subtle, wonderful wine which was able to hold its own against aged cheese and roasted beef. A true treasure I’m glad we uncorked!! (BTW - cork was LONG - get your longest screw out for this one)!!! — 2 years ago

Amazing wine. Hard to find this year. Had a newer one as well a few days later and it was also fantastic but with slightly less depth. — 3 years ago

Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tasmania Chardonnay 2014

Having a bit of a Tolpuddle time......have had worse weekends.....! If I have miscued on the irony these are very good wines! Pale Lemon in colour. Nutty almond and grapefruit notes with white citrus flowers with some funk - lees stirring? Light to medium weight palate with medium acid. Could go a couple more years if desired. This is a great example of cool climate Tasmanian Chardonnay. More Chablis than Meursault in style. The following day a little more tart. Tasted again 46 weeks later in Toowoomba on 21st January 2022 with consistent notes. Leesy funk. Citrus: Orange and Lime. Excellent. I will have the last one in at least a year’s time. — 4 years ago
