Funky natural wine, a bit of smoke and limestone on the finish. Enjoying wines imported by MFW. — 9 years ago
Damn. Rusty colored with an enormous fruit nose. Elegant. Showing SO BEAUTIFULLY OMG. At the MFW Italian portfolio tasting. — 10 years ago
If you look up tasting notes for the 2008 Abtserde, you'll come upon a common trait - green and herbal... MFW goes as far to say "as if Sauvignon Blanc has crossed the wine". Odd, yet undeniable when tasting the wine. So let me present the clincher - there's some whole bunch in the ferment.
What?! Whole bunch in a white ferment?! From KP of all people... But there's a damn good reason for this - it's to tame the wild acidity of the vintage... And let's not even talk about Abtserde being typically the most laser-focused site of KP's. Perhaps not a necessity, but sure is an interesting take on tackling deacidification in a natural manner.
For me, the 2008 Abtserde is incredibly special. There's so much pleasure in the power and salinity, yet intrigue in the herbal tones. But most of all, it feels personal... Like how I desire to make wines inspired by KP one day... KP made this wine inspired by the ideas of someone he holds in high esteem, Bernd Phillipi... This resonates with me... I don't know how to express this properly... But it's like the comfort of knowing that great wines didn't start out of nowhere... And that there's a chance in grasping the whole idea of great wine one day. — 8 years ago
In the presence of the 17' Schönleber AdL, there should not have been another riesling that outclassed it during the night... But then this appeared. Young as it may be, KP's Hipping approaches perfection. Dumbfounding!
I think Jean and David at MFW described this perfectly, so I'll just leave it here:
This 2017er Niersteiner Hipping GG delivers a beautiful nose where reductive elements including minty herbs, smoke, bacon and needle provide the frame for some glorious scents of grapefruit, tangerine, candied lime, fresh almond and coconut. The wine has the purity and lightness of mountain water yet its complexity and density on the mid-palate are just stunning. One can feel the intensity from the high levels of dry extracts but these are magnificently wrapped into spicy and salty elements. The length and impact in the finish are stunning. The after-taste seems to last for minutes. The wine is almost painfully dry at this stage, but the sheer freshness, intensity and complexity are simply breathtaking. This grandiose expression of dry Riesling may well turn into wine perfection in a decade: It is THAT impressive! — 7 years ago

Bright red fruits like currant, cherries, and hints of cranberries. Lots of acidity and tannins balance the fruit. It's really nice might be a favorite Cab Sauv. For me. #broccellars #mfw — 10 years ago

My notes seem a little lacking here. I believe this was the last dry riesling opened in the night and I didn't have much of it. All I could say was this - Whoa. High pressure wine. Superbly elegant balanced. 97.
NB: MFW gave this wine a whopping 99 pts. I'm gonna leave their tasting notes here to make up for my lack thereof.
This offers a breathtaking yet finely sizzled nose made of peach, pear, bergamot, sea breeze, flowery elements, mint and flint stone. The wine proves superbly elegant and refined on the palate. It develops density and a compact structure coupled to juicy complexity. Salty elements add freshness to the gorgeously focused palate. The finish is all about airiness, precision, focus and elegance. The overall balance is that found in the finest of Clos Sainte Hune or some of the mythical bottles of Künstler from the 1990s. This is a modern-day legend in the making! — 7 years ago
