It’s always a resounding ‘YES’ for JL Chave!!
That includes this luscious and concentrated Syrah from Saint-Joseph AOC in the Northern Rhône of France.
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a benchmark and icon of the Rhône Valley – a family-run operation since 1481 – with an entire range of deliciousness through the Domaine Jean-Louis Chave and JL Chave Selection portfolios.
This wine is deep ruby, trending on purple. It has pronounced aromas and flavors of boysenberry, blueberry, black cherry, cassis, pomegranate, also violet, bacon, sanguine, saddle leather, pipe tobacco, clove, cigar, damp earth, and black peppercorn. Alcohol is high (14.5% ABV) with medium (+) fine-grained and well-integrated tannins, medium (+) acidity, a medium (+) body, and a long, elegant finish.
It has a rustic and savory character with robust dark fruit notes; it’s layered, complex, structured, and age-worthy, benefitting from decanting. Still, it’s tasting wonderfully now.

CVed 9/12/17. After JL tasting of Oregon Pinot. Yummy Burg ready to drink. Opened up after half hour. Great nose and balance and lively finish. Earth and forest and fall leaves. Think my scoring is moving up. Wow opened 12/10/19 and it’s fresh and delicious as ever. That’s over two years. Terrific wine. Still have legs. Must be at that magical aged with fruits mixed with tertiary notes. Yum. — 9 years ago
I’m having trouble finding anything wrong with these bubbles- they are the perfect combination of yeastiness and sweetness of a cake with an extraordinary butter frosting, and a fruit compote on the side. Serious structure, and a little bitterness creeping in only at the finish. — 4 years ago
Medium garnet color with enticing nose of earthy red fruits, hints of menthol and lively, fresh and stimulating texture, great balance and good acidic bite and long finish. Excellent. 12.5 ABV. No idea it’s “all natural “ wine. Mylene Bru production. All old vine Carignan, 2700 bottles. JL 20. — 5 years ago

Wonderful vintage bubbly with nose-smacking yeastiness straw stones funkiness followed by toasty full throttled mouth feel and long complex finish. Surprised Wilson Mabel not the usual bright style. Stood up to every dish at Mom dinner. Impressive. Just saw bought from JL tasting in 2016! — 4 years ago
JL tasting Portugal Brira interior 2/20/18. $19. 25% each Cab Syrah petit verdot TN. Intestinal style but nose is balanced. Done heat. 14.5 ABV. Package is soft and balanced with sense of fruit sweetness and good length. Polished and silky. Good value. — 8 years ago
CVed 11/9/17 after JL tasting. Drinking nicely with more hints of forest floor and still very lively. Just a half step below the Brunello. Opened 9/29/18 AI work dinner. Drinking nicely still. — 9 years ago
JL Oregon tasting 9/12/17. $55. Made the same as cousins but with better grapes from same top vineyards. Similar nose with less funk and more bright red fruits. Balanced but a bit sweeter on palate with long and complex finish. Interesting texture that's stimulating. Nice. But much higher bucks. — 9 years ago
