Harrison Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Carménère 2017

A nicely aged wine at its pinnacle. Smooth, integrated tannins with dark fruit and leather. Good acidity but still pleasing without food. Some whisps of smoke on the backend. — 13 days ago

Excellente! Velvet, dark berries, soft tannins, pronounced spices. A great bottle that I enjoyed immensely! — 2 years ago

Antica Terra

Obelin Pinot Noir 2018

Wow. From Maggie Harrison at Antica Terra, this is one of the best ones I’ve had from that winery. It doesn’t quite have the depth and complexity of her top-end wines (e.g., Cerras)…but it is also spectacular at this young of an age (as opposed to the higher end ones, which I think need several years in bottle before they really start to sing). In this regard, this wine is kind of like an off-scale Rosso di Montalcino that you enjoy while you wait for the brunellos to come of age. This wine was fantastic. Amazing fruit, perfect balance, and expanded beautifully on the palate. Just terrific. — 3 years ago

Napa Valley Petit Verdot 2013

Not too often do you get to drink 100% petit Verdot. My last bottle after 2-3 the last few years. Double decanted, then consumed from bottle over the course of 6hrs.

Special anniversary bottling. 36 months in oak. Right off the bat, I’d say the wine likely needed/benefitted from that amount of oak due to how brash PV can be solo, but I’d also say it’s probably going to cause the tannin to outlive the fruit. Not as black as I expected in the glass, more of a deep red-purple. Aromatics of ripe red and black berry fruits, baking spices, dark cocoa, and dark espresso. For being all PV slathered in a lot of oak, it’s very elegant on the palate…seems like a merlot/Mourvèdre hybrid with its black cherry cordial, chocolate and slightly smoked meat notes. There’s a unique tangy-ness to the fruit, and a lot of tannin at the finish. No rush, but if you want a good bit of fruit to balance things out, maybe consume in the next 3-5yrs.

@Dawn E. : You certainly don’t see PV on its own very often!

@Hugh O'Riordan : Same here. Their Simpatico is quite the value wine.

Antica Terra

Angelicall Pinot Noir Rosé 2019

Terrific rose of pinot noir from Maggie Harrison of Antica Terra. This is not your garden-variety rose: serious skin contact time coupled with her incredible wine-making abilities has produced a really substantive wine. Reminds me a bit of Manfred’s SQN roses (not surprising, I guess, since Maggie worked with Manfred for I believe a decade or so before striking out on her own with what I think is the best winery in the Willamette Valley). Do yourself a favor and try to snag some of this. Terrific juice. — 3 years ago

I am about as big a fan of this rosé as anyone. Regardless of price, I absolutely love it. I know you also enjoy Andremily (as do I)…have you tried their rosé? It’s bigger and more rich in style, akin to SQN rosés, more so than the Angelicall. But, I believe those three rosés belong in a category all to their own!

@Shay A, I have had thd Andremily (only bought 3 - should have gotten more, because these will age for a couple of years. Check out Paix sur Terre’s rose of mourvedre. Lighter style, but Ryan Pease is growing those mourvedre grapes specifically to make rose.
