Himmelstiege Grüner Veltliner 2023

Vintage 2023 | I almost never drink a glass of wine just by itself… but always at dinner. My wine friends critize me if I state: this is a dinnerwine to eat with. They say: wine must be good by itself, Peter. I advocate that wine tastes much better with food. This grüner veltliner is kind of middle of the road (at this moment) when you drink it by itself. We combined it with a baguette with goose rillettes. Like opening the himmel/heaven a bit. 😝 — 19 days ago

Goose rillette and GV instantly made the list of awesome pairing ideas I want to try. And I will start a week in Austria tomorrow 😁

Zocker

Paragon Vineyard Grüner Veltliner 2015

Clearance priced at my local supermarket, only Grüner in the joint. But is it so old it’s past peak? (Given wholesaler practices in my home state of Arizona, entirely possible) light straw, excellent clarity. Clean nose with some floral and mineral notes. Nice acidity finishing toward a lactic-citric blend. Light on the citrus flavors, maybe lemon pith and grapefruit peel, some spice also. Not quite bone dry. Better with food, and better an hour or two after opening. Still life in this bottle, not peaked yet, perhaps. A more structured experience than fruit forward, however. Not that typical a Grüner then... — 4 years ago

Grüner Veltliner 2021

All proceeds to Walla Walla’s SOS Clinic, free, nonprofit health services. Pale yellow, floral and peach aromas, peach and lemon flavors. Crisp, light skin astringency. Mineral and slightly lactic finish. A good cause, and a pretty good take on this varietal. Enjoy. — 2 years ago

Hahndorf Hill Winery

GRU Adelaide Hills Grüner Veltliner 2019

Served blind by me at Sue Bell’s dinner party with Bruce Redman. After being tricked by Sue all week with blind tastings at the winery I was determined to get square. She was up to the task getting just the state wrong. Once I said Adelaide Hills she knew it was a Gruner. Hahndorf Hill are acknowledged as the best producers of Gruner in Australia. Taking its lead from the GV’s of Austria’s Kamptal region. Grapefruit, Citrus and stone fruit. A multi award winner on the Australian Show circuit. A gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards London 2020. — 4 years ago

@Bob McDonald have only had their Cabernet (which was quite delicious). Will have to find a bottle.

@Simon Gilligan Quite close to a cellar door visit from where you live. Worth the trip to taste all their GVs. I was a bit disappointed with their Blaufrankisch but I don’t have much experience with this varietal.
