Ji Jian Gaglioppo Rosé 2019

Baller. Slightly hazy brick-ruby in the glass- completely unique in appearance and flavor. Crushed herbs and rosehips, wild berries, river rocks on the nose. Bright red cherries mingle with green watermelon rind on the palate. Juicy acids and prickly tannins. Some dank phenolics give this depth and mystery. Amphora aged, no so2 Gaglioppo rosato from Calabria; and it is totally pristine. — 15 days ago

Calabria IGT Gaglioppo

Surprisingly complex for an inexpensive wine. Opens with notes of dark plums, tea, and wet earth in the nose with a hint of sweetness. Heavy body with a bitter lingering finish. — 5 months ago

Vurgadà Calabria IGT Red Blend 2017

Served double-blind. Deep, glass staining ruby red with an utterly opaque core. On the nose, decadent, sightly confected, red fruits...almost red rope licorice like...mixed with spiced dark fruits (plums and currants) and cocoa. The palate is more dark fruited with semi-sweet chocolate chips…the ones made with the natural vanilla, and some coffee but there is good acid and the tannins, which are quite fine, are also quite sneaky. Long, satisfying finish. This comes across as a fairly extracted wine and I wondered if there as some residual sugar, possibly some appassimento?? I was totally stumped. Revealed to be this blend of Nerello Cappuccio and Gaglioppo; the latter I had zero experience with but, apparently, related to Sangiovese. This is a wine of intense concentration and proved to be most enjoyable on Day 3 once everything became a bit more integrated. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with Calabrian wines so I’m unsure if this is truly representative or an outlier. I’m intrigued and I think that the quality is certainly there. Paired very well on Day 1 with Osso Bucco and saffron risotto. — 8 months ago

GREAT, especially as a go-to red. Incredibly drinkable, but med weight and satisfying. Well balanced, not tight. Would case this. — 3 months ago

Cirò Classico Superiore Gaglioppo 2015

Delectable Wine

The 2015 Cirò Rosso is a terrific expression of Gaglioppo. Crushed raspberry, cherry, sandalwood and dusty dried rose tones are found throughout. Soft and pliant upon entry, the Rosso turns zesty, with a reverberation of tart berry tension and tobacco toward the energetic close. $25.00 (Eric Guido, Vinous, June 2021) — 5 months ago
