The highlight of my 2023 Harvest trip to Napa. This is a magnum from the Nickel’s personal wine cellar. Had the pleasure of enjoying over several hrs. Begun tasting at their underground cellar at the estate in the afternoon and finished over diner in the evening. The last glass reached a new level of enlightenment; the wine tasted young again with bright fruit; in complete harmony with with the acid, alcohol, tannins and nuances. Unforgettable experience. A seriously delicious experiment in fermentation. Fresh, funky, kaleidoscopic red fruit and honey aromas are deftly balanced by a streak of lactic/citric acidity in the mouth, perfumed with rose hips and enlivened by delicate tannins. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. — 5 years ago

The fruit is slimmer than that of Mortet at the top, but well-matched creamy oak fattens the middle and the dark mineral layer provides solid foundation at the bottom. Bruno Clair wines are always austere like Bize’s, but slightly beefier and darker. There is a set of qualities here, class, enlightenment and restraint, that distinguishes the best from the rest.
