Elderton

Barossa Shiraz 2010

At eight years of age this one is still incredibly youthful. Mostly dark primary fruit - juicy blackcurrant - with spicy tobacco notes. Drinking swimmingly right now. — 7 years ago

Small Victories Wine Co

Old Vine Grenache

@Delectable Wine this is actually Old Vine Grenache which they don't produce every year.

The girls had access to an old plot of vines from the Elderton properties and the idea to make this gorgeous little wine was automatic.

Small victories is a department of Elderton in a way. It is run by the two wives of the Ashmead bros owners of Elderton wines.

The winemaker Jules is a Campbell from Rutherglen and has winemaking written all over her DNA. She is super attentive all along the process. Wines are wild fermented and looked after like babies.

The wine is juicy and fresh.
Running like a teenager not sitting down like an old person.
I look forward to see all the next wines they will make.

Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz 2016

Ripe fruits, creamy mouthfeel, full bodied with lovely acidity and rounded tannins. Not spicy for a Shiraz. — 5 years ago

Elderton

Barossa GSM Grenache Blend 2015

At the Elderton Tasting and Dinner at the Downs Club hosted by co-owner Cameron Ashmead. I preferred this GSM to the Entry Level Shiraz with its sweet plummy earthy fruit and supple tannins. A crowd favourite on the night. — 7 years ago

Command Single Vineyard Shiraz 1998

Popped and poured, enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 1998 “Command” pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity and moderate staining of the tears. Definitely some fine sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and mostly dried black and red fruits: brambles, blueberries, blackberries, dates, grilled meat, leather, purple flowers, marjoram, earth and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin (mostly integrated) and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose with the addition of an umami/Maillard reaction sort of thing giving a rich, savory finish. Drink now as it’s in slow decline. — 4 months ago

Yalumba

The Octavius Barossa Old Vine Shiraz 2008

The first of 3 Yalumba Octavius Shiraz brought to the Cairns BYO Indian restaurant. No formal notes but you could use the notes for the just posted Elderton Command. The other 2 Octavius drunk on the night were 2015 and 2016 which were excellent but way too young. — 3 years ago

E Series Chardonnay 2017

Choosing the next Downs Club White wine from 44 masked entries. Great balance between fruit and oak - the former in the peaches/stone fruit style. Very balanced. Amazing QPR selling for $15 on the Elderton web site with a LUC to the Club at under $10. My choice on the night but sadly democracy prevailed and another wine got the nod. — 6 years ago
