Dom Pérignon

Brut Rosé Champagne 2006

Shay A
9.5

My contribution for a large, annual BYO champagne dinner. While this was a standout, others were: La Closerie LC20, ‘07 Cristal rosé en mag, ‘19 Westborn BdB

This vintage had 20% addition of red wine.

The notes below about bottle variation is exactly what was experienced this evening. A friend also brought the ‘06 Dom Rosé but there was a clear difference between the two. Whereas my bottle was deep, rich and an interplay of florals, juicy red fruits, fleshy peach and strawberry shortbread cookies, his seemed like a slightly less vibrant (not off putting) and more muted version (maybe low trace TCA?). The significant portion of red wine in this vintage has provided great structure at nearly age 20, and not as evolved as the regular 2006 Dom (more vinous than the creamy ‘07 Cristal rosé).

If I had another, I’d open it in the next year or two for this same profile but wouldn’t be worried about holding another 5+.

What are the red grape varietals they used?

Échézeaux Pinot Noir 2005

gorgeously transparent. Some stems and floral notes, gnarly but super pure fruit. Still contained but very lifted and pretty and effortless. — 12 days ago

Taittinger

Comtes de Champagne Grand Crus Brut Blanc de Blancs 2006

Aromas of lemon zest, white peach, and chalky minerality are layered with hints of toasted brioche and hazelnut. On the palate, vibrant acidity with a creamy, seamless texture. The finish is long and precise. A confident elegance. This bottle makes you yell , “Why don’t I own magnums?” — 10 days ago

Agree, Mags on Champagne are different than 750, maybe a dose of grandeur, and maybe some producers (Pierre Peters) have been known to dosage the 750/1500 ml proportionally different, but Taittinger to my knowledge is straight. A favorite in our house as well, we tasted the 2006 initially on premise at the Domaine, a wonderful experience that I'll encourage to anyone in the area.

La Tâche Pinot Noir 1970

DRC Night at Secrets Moxché in Cancun. Held up better than most aged burgs I’ve had. Color is pale garnet, brickish. Notes of old church, library, dried red berries, medium body, acidity still vibrant. Long finish. Past its peak, possibly, but extremely intelectual wind. — a month ago

Grands Échézeaux Pinot Noir 2019

It’s not about QPR when you have a chance to drink history. I had other plans for this bottle but I thought about the bottles I’ve sold over the years and never tasted which now I regret.
You can’t take them with you so you might as well enjoy while you can. Very good, bigger than I expected from a Burgundy but its another bucket list bottle
