This was wild. This is a single vineyard selection out of the 6 vineyards that go in to the Substance. Obviously in an oxidative style, I found this to show more oxidized fruit yet wasn’t as savory as the Substance. Golden amber in the glass. Overripe apricot, pineapple and guava drizzled in honey aromatics. Basically zero bubbles. Not necessarily yeasty/doughy, but there is a toasted flair. — 18 hours ago

More fruit than mineral drive. Mango, nectarine, linear acidity, slight chalky mineral finish. Excellent length and purity. Paired with Thai shrimp and basil stir fry. — 20 days ago

It’s always interesting to find wines that pair with Thai cuisine.

Horsepower Vineyards

Sur Echalas Vineyard Syrah 2013

Nose is funky. Braised beef and charcoal. Entry tastes like the sludge at the bottom of my charcoal grill. Barbecue Lays potato chips and Italian herbs. Finishes with an herbal, grilled ribeye note. This has me totally on the robes. Definitely not my wheelhouse when it comes to Syrah but this was a really fun wine, and I can say that every time I have one in this style, my ears perk up a little bit and I am wondering if I am slowly turning to the dark side. — 2 days ago

First time having the Horsepower Syrah...only had the Grenache prior. This is wholly Christophe Baron’s style showing beautifully. These are certainly made in a unique style and I understand they can be a bit polarizing...for me, they are just fascinating and delicious. “The Rocks” style funk aromatics of olive tapenade, oregano, smoked brisket and iron driven. Spicy and nimble on the palate showing peppercorn, underripe brambly style fruit, whole cluster crunchiness, and bacon burnt end savoriness at the finish. Thank you for opening, @Keith Fisher .

This had one of the most unique aromatics of a champagne I’ve ever come across. Toasty, doughy, but with marzipan and golden raisins. The palate was balanced between fruit (caramel dipped apple) and honeycomb with sea salt. Would like to try again. Thanks @Clare Gillette — 2 days ago
