The Nines by Law Grenache 2016

Shay A
9.4

I’ve had a few Law wines and have enjoyed them all, but this bottle of “The Nines” was a total stunner. In a lineup of 16 bottles of Grenache (Andremily, SQN, Fingers Crossed, Saxum, Lillian, Alban, Pegau Capo, Prefert, Clarendon Hills, etc), this was one of the more surprising wines of the day (in a good way).

100% Grenache. Removed the cork for about an hour ahead of time. Undeniable Grenache aromatics of red florals, cherry/kirsch liqueur, black peppered strawberries, and fruitcake. As Grenache so wonderfully does, it has a weightless yet commanding palate…kaleidoscope of red and black berries, sweet jerky, and an interplay of both sweet and spicy spices. Doesn’t show whole cluster/green hints like some of the others, and it also doesn’t show overwhelming vanilla/oak tannin either. Elegant and delicious.

May have underscored this…

Delicious. Medium color and body. Light juicy and floral aromas. #giro grape. Pepe and I traded bottles. I asked him about this grape and I’m still awaiting a response. There’s a Giro grape on Mallorca that was recovered by some friends of mine Miquel and Toni Gelabert, but that grape is white and has gris and red mutations…this wine of Pepe from #Alicante is red and not gris. Then there’s a Giro on Sardegna but Pepe has yet to tell me if it’s the same as the Sardinian grape or not. In any case it’s somewhere between a Light Garnacha and a Trosseau noir very perfumed and soft. Highly recommendable. I drank straight away because it was too tasty but it can age for 3/5 years no problem. — 4 years ago

Cuvée da Capo Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache Syrah 2020

Hard to properly rate, was not decanted and not open long enough. Deep red & black fruit on the nose. The tannins are quite strong, this still needs time. It’s too young. But a lot of complexity under that. — 18 days ago

Almerita Brut Chardonnay

Very refreshing siting by the pool at Capo Faro winery. Citrus, yeasty, and a candied aroma….perhaps butterscotch. Crisp on the palette with a nice acidity. — 3 years ago

Cuvée Laurence Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2017

Popped and poured but not something I would recommend. The 2017 Cuvée Réservée benefited from some time in the decanter and the Cuvée Laurence would enjoy the same. However, a decanter we had not; nor was the setting appropriate. And while I wouldn’t have described this as shy upon opening, it certainly went from strength to strength with exposure to air and by the last glass, this was sensational. Beautiful dark bramble fruit, salmiakki, black pepper, red flowers, bacon fat, garrigue, old wood, and exotic spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long lasting and ever so sexy. As a reminder, no “Cuvee da Capo” was made in 2017 so there’s no wonder why this is special. Drink now through 2042. — 2 months ago
