Bulgarian Treasure

Ridge Vineyards

Monte Bello Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2019

Served blind alongside what was eventually revealed to be the 2018 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars “SLV”. This was immediately recognizable as Montebello with a textbook nose of deftly balanced American oak and a decidedly brighter version of Cabernet Sauvignon. Distinctive and distinguished but woefully young. Unless you have multiples, please hang onto these until at least 2029. I am convinced that Monte Bello is truly an American treasure. — 3 years ago

Abrente

Napa Valley Albariño 2013

Another hidden treasure...I know we should have popped it earlier... but this joint venture between Morgan Twain-Peterson from Bedrock and Michael Havens (first producer of New World Albariño) is still alive. Medium gold/yellow in the glass... perhaps not quite as vibrant acid-wise as at release, but very powerful and pleasant. Slightly waxy and round, sporting a bit of funk, but notes of unripe pear, green apple, and green papaya bring a smile. I don’t think this wine is currently made, but I always thought it a real QPR bargain. — 5 years ago

Vinica Mavrud 2011

100% Mavrud grapes, dried for 2-3 months outside, "Bulgarian Amarone". Spices, dried herbs, preserved / cooked fruit, cocoa, leather. Very powerful, full bodied wine, high tannins and alcohol, lots of ageing potential — 8 years ago

Révélation Vin de Pays d'Oc Chardonnay 2023

This sub $10 Trader Joe’s treasure really shines. The butter is restrained and balanced, also has a bright acidity. Notes of citrus on the nose and caramel, vanilla and butterscotch on the palate. Great delightful wine to pair with spicy food. — 9 months ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2017

2022/10. If it’s even possible, my appreciation for Produttori grows every year. This is a lovely, textbook traditional Barbaresco with a extra layer of lush fruit. Considering how prices are going in the Langhe, this is a treasure. — 4 years ago

Château Gazin

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

AMAZING BORDEAUX that’s still able to shine, decanted, after a few hours of opening! In ritual notes of damp leather, subdued / dried fruits and felt past its prime. 2 hours later - completely blossomed into this robust, aged, beautiful almost “fruit forward” masterpiece with almost olive overtones. I’m sure it was a great bottle 10, 20, even 30 years ago - but now it’s almost better as it’s transformed into this subtle, wonderful wine which was able to hold its own against aged cheese and roasted beef. A true treasure I’m glad we uncorked!! (BTW - cork was LONG - get your longest screw out for this one)!!! — 4 years ago

Bulgariana

Thracian Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Bulgariana Thracian Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015: Hit or miss? A great find or not? Is price always the indicator of quality? Wine is very subjective & personal but in my eyes, this was a hidden treasure. I found this wine during a work trip to Bethesda, Maryland at a corner liquor store across the street from my hotel. It was medium-bodied, smooth and very flavorful. Light tannins and layers of red fruits. A pleasant surprise from Bulgaria. Cheers🍷 — 6 years ago

25 Ans d'Age Bas Armagnac

What a delicious Bas-Armagnac. Rich with vanilla and caramel notes all in abundance. But what makes this such a delightful spirit is its intensity, smoothness and the finish that lasts several minutes. Twenty five years aged, and some, this Bas-Armagnac was a little treasure that I picked up at a store that was, sadly, closing. I'm glad I did. — 8 years ago

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2002

Can't believe I've held on to this treasure for so long! Cedar and sandalwood on the nose. Silky with a bright and savory--almost vegetal--finish. Perfect with filet and steak-house style garlicky creamed spinach. These grapes were picked when I was still in high school! — 9 years ago

Domaine Maume

Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2010

Gorgeous, flinty nose with hint of barnyard. Grippy tannins. Hint of coffee and soy sauce after 3 hours. Almost Valentini Cerasuolo-ish. Imperial Treasure Teochew Ion with Andrew Dutton.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There I was suggesting that Maume's Mazis-Chambertin 2011 was clearly not the pick from the domaine this vintage and lo and behold, it trumps all in a blind tasting. It has quite an earthy note on the nose with mint-tinged red fruit and black plum unfurling at its own leisurely pace in the glass. Later, this is joined by fennel and rosemary scents, creating an intriguing aromatics profile. The palate is medium-bodied, a touch foursquare on the entry, but with good substance, the texture grainy and quite peppery toward the finish. There is a lot going on in this grand cru and it will be fascinating to see how it develops and if it maintains this stellar quality. RP95, 2011, issued Nov 2014

Morlet Family Vineyards

Mon Chevalier Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

This is my Hurricane Harvey wine. After being housebound by flooding for 6 days I decided to open this gem from Morlet which shows all the classic Knight's Valley character I love. It is a treasure of cassis, black currants, incense and sandalwood, tar and menthol. Black pepper and spice box. The palate is a layered as is the nose, with a succulentdark fruit core framed with understated, fine,, mouthcoating tannins. 15.0% alcohol — 9 years ago

Vineyard 29

The Essentials 29 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1995

With no perceptive barrier between the warmth of the atmosphere, the spice carried by the winds of Raja Ampat, Indonesia, and the sirens call bouquet of this wine--vitality and strength are resonant. The power of the nose and the follow through of palette lead none to believe that it had spent more than two decades in bottle. A treasure, floating in through the Archipelago... 1995 vintage — 9 years ago

Antica Terra

Aurata Chardonnay 2012

Absolutely terrific wine. Bound to uplift even the most doomy-gloomy mood. As such, it pairs well with political discourse and the prospect of "President Trump." Go ahead, drink those sorrows away. You deserve it.

Beautiful, shimmering golden color. I believe it's actually already deepening with age. (2012 vintage consumed in mid-2016)

On the nose, apricot fruit and unrefined honey dominate but is accompanied with a menagerie of rare and precious aromatics. The result is a feeling of having something truly exotic in your glass. This is a world-class wine for which there could never be any argument over its worthiness. You will be taken by this wine and there's really no way to over-hype it and set the expectation bar too high because this wine will meet it every time.

As we dig in deeper past the obvious top notes, we discover a treasure chest filled with persimmon, sandalwood, white flower, and vanilla bean.

Upon first entry in the mouth you are met with a zippy liveliness but then that melts gently across your palate to really give you a fine, pervasive coating that excites the taste buds in every corner of your mouth. This is a POWERHOUSE of assertive flavor. This wine will stage a veritable coup d'etat upon your complacent palate. There will be an ouster of your resident ennui. No incumbent sense of boredom will be safe from this wave of populist essence. There will be a complete and total transition of power in the halls of your mind's parliament leading to a peaceful but efficacious revolution. With your personal Congress in shambles, this fresh new confederacy shall draft a Constitution that will usher in a new era of utopian cooperation and transcendental civic euphoria!

Sorry, maybe for a little carried away there. For reals though. Drink this wine when you're feeling down and feel the BURN! Well, not really - because the alcohol is really well-integrated. ;)
