Amongst The Clouds

Conti Costanti

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2012

Previous tasting note here was for October 2022. Aromas of menthol , plum skins and friable soil. Medium bodied palate showing a strangely sweet chocolate character amongst the savouriness. A few years left in the drinking window. Have the last one in 2+ years. — 16 days ago

Clouds Rest

Femme Fatale Estate Grown Pinot Noir 2016

Quite surprising. Smelled of black currants, blackberries. Tasted of prunes with nice acid at the end and not much tannins. Really dark fruit. — 7 months ago

Ampodium Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2010

Better on day 2&3. Very refined. Less wild and gamey than other producers. Less oak influence as well, which was refreshing. Pepper notes were hidden amongst layers of blue and black fresh fruit. — 3 years ago

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Hermitage Blanc Marsanne Roussanne 1996

Dark gold. Heavy like oil in the glass. At open this has an oxidative nose with a heavy dose of apple cider. But the first taste revealed a massive core of fruit with a lot of acidity. Thus with air this opened up to reveal a powerful and rich wine. Notes of ripe apples, uncut lemons, beeswax, stones and tan spice. Some heat suggests this has a fair amount of alcohol too. I liked this but was alone amongst the family in that assessment. I would say drink these up sooner rather than later but it depends how you like your aged white Rhône. — 4 years ago

Château La Conseillante

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

Tasted side by side with the 1990, as well as the 2005 (en magnum). There was another 1989 at the table and two other 1989s at the dinner, plus one more 1990. There was bottle variation amongst the 1989s, but all were solid. Nevertheless, this 1989 was generally regarded as the best of this vintage. The 1990 was more rounded and complete. The 1989 had more acidity 35 years on, but worked well with the sweet bread. — a month ago

La Fiorita

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2017

This was a nice medium weight BdM , a touch tannic upon opening but that resolved nicely after an hour’s decant and a nice steak.
Dark fruits, some wood, leather, acidity a bit tamped down ( could be the heat of the vintage). Slight burnt orange and toffee in there.
Amongst 4 people, it didn’t last long.

Ministry of Clouds

McLaren Vale Grenache 2021

I made no notes at the restaurant so doing this from memory. Firstly when the menu is degustation, I never get the matching wine option, preferring to choose a bottle that goes with all courses as much as possible. This light to medium bodied Grenache fits the bill and ticks all the boxes - best district for Grenache in Australia; old vine Grenache, a terrific vintage in South Australia; and a hands off, alternate producer. Grenache can be such a chameleon from barely medium weight with stalky red fruits like this one, with a lovely red floral perfume, to full bodied versions like Rayas and Bonneau Celestins. Barb and I really enjoyed this. Also, Delectable, this was a Grenache Carignan blend - not offered in your database. Continuing our road trip through the Mornington Peninsula. — 4 months ago

Yes , David. I like what we call BYOs in Australia where we can “Bring Your Own” with a corkage charge. A great idea!

Curly Flat

Pinot Noir 2017

It’s been a while between Curly pinots. Always a joy to open one, with fond memories attached along with the pleasure of the wine itself. Despite five years from vintage, this is still young and stern but elegant. Clear lines and structure, a spicy, cedary top note amongst red fruit and firm but soft tannins. Clean, I’d call it, plus whole bunch characters. Quality pinot undoubtedly, that should improve even more. — 2 years ago

M3 Vineyard Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2012

Mid lemon in colour - crystal clear. A funky leesy note amongst the grapefruit with a touch of honey. A powerful palate of great intensity. Flavours in the grapefruit spectrum Partial malo adds interest. Great balance between restraint and mouth filling flavours. Plenty of skilled winemaking on show here. — 4 years ago

@Scott Rowe I have some of your 2012 Shiraz in the cellar waiting for a few more years before pulling the cork. Will look forward to that.
