Lodi Petit Verdot vs. Petite Sirah

Silly label. The two Petites are the boxers I guess. Cloves and such. Complex and full. Complete. Delicious. — 15 days ago

Luigi Maffini

Kratos Paestum Fiano 2018

Really good minerals, first thing. Aromatic, but limited, like really honeyed sprite. Smells almost like an aged spatlese. Looks lightweight but has a slightly heavier body than appears, like gasoline does. Don’t get this confused with petrol taste, but the weight has that alchemy. Unlike Riesling it has a bitter and spicy phenolic note at the end that seems to come with more southern whites. Middle weight in reality. Good heavy orchard fruit. I like fiano and I’m still learning it’s limits. Every once and awhile I find a great one, but I want to learn what the typicality is. — 4 years ago

@Chris Shultz the Italian guide books seem to admire Maffini but I’ve not had good luck with his wines. They struck me as a little soft and sweet.

@Chris MacLean I’ve found the guide books don’t always agree with me on Italian whites. I’ll go to the other extreme which I enjoyed, picariello, soon. I liked the intensity

Memory Found Syrah

Excellent balance. Just the right amount of rocks funk. I wish more Washington Syrah was like this. — 4 months ago

The Big Red Monster California Petite Sirah Blend

A good one. Not big on reds but this one is smooth and straightforward. No bitter finish smooth from start to finish. Nothing particularly standout flavor wise but nice — 3 years ago

Alois Lageder

Riff Terra Alpina Pinot Grigio 2018

The Dolamites are where Pinot Grigio goes for some respect. Alois Lageder is one of the larger productions, but one with a well-intended heart and honest dedication to making real biodynamic high quality wine. He does so with success and though Terr Alpina is entry level, there is nothing to complain about. Sturdy orchard fruits and citrus, clean and crisp. — 4 years ago

Radici Fiano di Avellino 2015

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this evening with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Our Pops conductor Keith Lockhart is leading a live-to-picture performance of Star Wars: A New Hope, a showing of the classic 1977 film, with the Orchestra performing Mr. Williams’ iconic score.
For live-to-picture productions, the orchestra performs the entire movie score in real time as the film unspools. (Vocals, dialogue and effects are isolated from the original music track.)
Generally we get to hear Star Wars scores a couple times per season here at Tanglewood, but tonight we get a chance to hear them with the backdrop of the movie (Episode IV) that launched a franchise, to say the least!

I celebrated another full trip around the sun, since my coming into this world, earlier this week. Tonight my wife, some dear friends and me will be enjoying some enticing wines along with our movie night. So notes...maybe, but I'll try!

Solera Gran Reserva Brandy

Suppose you dissolved Werthers candies in bourbon then added a dash of coffee and...made it somehow richer without being cloying. It’s the alchemy of fractional blending in solera of used Sherry barrels sweet babies. I love Sherry de Jerez, it is great fun. It goes the distance. — 3 years ago

Young Nebbiolo!!! Yesssss. This worked. Tannins in check, bright fruit, moderate acidity. What’s the magic? Hope it’s not alchemy in the cellar. — 4 years ago
