St. Estèphe, Médoc

Château Ormes de Pez

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1998

Medium ruby garnet , quite wide garnet rim . Touch of greeness on the nose , then sous bois , coffee and touch of tobacco . On the palate slightly rounder than expected , with red and dark fruits, blackberry , cherry . Quite good acidity and rounded just slightly bitter tannins . Ok length , slightly toasty finish . Drink now and over the next 5 years or so. — 6 days ago

Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1966

1966 vintage. Last tasted 9.20.23. That bottle was a little "chunkier." This one was more refined. Decanted and tasted nearly immediately and throughout a 2 hour window. Throwing the expected kitchen sink's worth of sed. Color initially seemed lighter, like 30+ year old red Burg but ended up being a tad darker than that. Light-medium body. Earth, summer dirt and Valrhona chocolate in the nose. All this plus dried cherries in the frontal palate finish. Not much to speak of on the back end. Rated that 9.20.23 bottle an 8.8 and this is slightly better. Still...a definite rush to crush this. 11.11.23. — 25 days ago

Crazy how youthful this was at 34 years young! Still some vibrant fruit and nice layers. What a wine. Thx to Pauli for sharing! — 8 days ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

2005 vintage. Decanted and tasted immediately and through 3 hours. Great fill/appropriate aging cork. Medium sed. Noticeably dark color. Any trace of the usual Cos baby fat for the first decade+ after release long gone geek. Interesting. This was a lean, mean, street-fighting machine with "minerality" to spare. Intense. Compact. Unsure if it will continue to menace in the next decade of life or retreat into a reclusive, "turtling" period. Best guess? Street-fighter par excellence. Regardless of taking the high or low road, it's not devolving into a drink 'em if you got 'em any time soon scenario. Thanksgiving 11.23.23. — 13 days ago

Château Gruaud Larose

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1945

Meaty and dense in the nose. Tobacco and leather. A whiff of iodine and a savory and still there palate. Some fresh and pretty fruit still which is kinda epic. Fascinating — 4 days ago

Château Tronquoy-Lalande

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

Dark ruby hue. Medium-plus tannins and acidity. Notes of bell pepper, blackberry, blueberry, bramble, and tar. Stark on the nose, but brilliant and smooth on the palate, with grippy tannins. 51 Merlot, 42 Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7 Petit Verdot. — 25 days ago

Château Lilian Ladouys

Saint Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Drinking beautifully right now. Cedar, a hint of roasted peanuts, cassis, violets. Flavors going from secondary to tertiary, with leathery notes, roasted green herbs, and other savory notes. Tannins are still showing, but given the flavor development I wouldnt wait for them to soften further. Very good value! — 18 days ago

I love this wine. But it needs bottle age to show its inner beauty.

Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

Purchased for my birthday-we share a birth year! And wholly dedicated to my grandfather who recently passed, and wanted to purchase this wine for me. The body is a clear, light ruby, with some bricking. The nose is very clean, pronounced and complex, bringing on notes of plum, raisin, blackberry, cherry, green pepper, mint, leather, and faint pipe tobacco. The palate has medium acidity, moderately integrated tannins, and flavours of cherry, plum, more pepper, herbs, and a finish of leather and olive.Brilliant wine! Drank 2017 — 17 days ago

This is really good!
Beautiful mixture of traditional Bordeaux secondary aromatics, powdery tannines, supporting refreshing acidity and modern-day fruit purity and cleanliness.
Wonderful wine.
